Lab 10,979
Theres another thread asking "how too make money with 2k?"..............well if Arsenal go out and buy a prolific goalscorer for next season then i'd stick the 2k on them winning the league..... I couldnt agree more....if they had a couple of old fashioned English centre halfs and an Ian Wright type finisher they would be a very hard side to beat, they make so many chances in and around the box Ian Wright would be in his element. YOu look at the side on paper and theres not really any players you would swap for Utd or Chelseas equivalent player.....yet they are always up and around there....trouble i think they will have is unless they do buy a few players to finish the team off they are likely to lose kids like Ramsey/Wiltshire.....young kids want to be winning stuff not building for the future. Well if Ramsey and Wiltshire want to win stuff them i'm quite happy to take them up here at the Hoops........ Arsenal have too many attacking mid-field players that want to walk the ball in the net.....a poaching goal box striker would have a field day...
gnasher16 30,470
Scottish teams cant compete on the same level as the English clubs due to the finances. The SPL is badly run by self serving individuals who are out to line their pockets. You only have to look at the deal with Santanta to see how short sighted they are. We get something like 5million to share among the SPL and the teams being relegated from the premiership have a parachute payment of over 30 million, you dont have to be a genius to work out why our game is rotten. Even in the good old days all the scottish, welsh & irish teams were only ever feeder clubs for the the top English sides who cherry picked all the top players for themselves. They dont need to do that now with the money from Sky they can continue to attract the best players from all over the world who lets face it are only here for the money. If the Sky deal ever goes down the swanny and the arabs and russians leave how many English sides would disappear. This isn't sour grapes it's just the way it is. As a country we are not developing players like we did 20 30 yrs ago its gone and I dont know if it'll ever come back. Having 42 clubs or whatever it is within a population the size of London doesnt help !!....Why the need for a further 3 divisions after the premier league is beyond me....if Inverness CT get gates of 3,000 and they are a mid table premier league side, simple logic tells you theres no need for a further 30 clubs behind them.....Scottish football is run more like sunday football and thats fine......but when yous get all hot under the collar about the money in English football you direct your anger at us down here instead of looking at your own game.....i mean,i could half understand if you was still producing top footballers, but your not even doing that anymore. They got rid of all their seasoned winners at the wrong time IMO. They shod Pires, Henry, Viera, etc, all within the space of a few years. This left the team with no experience to shape the young talent. You look at that current Arsenal squad and there's no winners left in it. By that I mean people who have been there, stayed teh course & done it all. I reckon if they'd have made a few exceptions to their policy of only offering one year deals to their over thirties, they might have managed to keep a few experienced players who could be looked to when times got tough. These days Arsenal are one of Europe's best teams when everything is going their way but then have a tendency to implode when something goes wrong, both during games and over seasons as a whole. Its a fair point....but i do think Wenger has a knack of letting players go at the right times from a purely footballing point of view....the 3 players you mentioned, did they ever again reach the heights they did at Arsenal,no.......but i get what your saying,to bring the youngsters along.Wenger has done everything on a budget, look at Henry he came to Arsenal for pennies as a left winger and left one of the worlds great strikers....Wenger is a chairmans dream, but as a simple football manager he should really be screaming out to his chairman for money to improve his squad.......for me Wenger has too much power at that club he,s a football coach not an accountant......the crossroads will come there when they start slipping out of the top 4 and not getting the champions league money.I know a few Arsenal fans who once there challenge for the league had failed actually wanted them to finish 5th or 6th....for that reason Edited May 22, 2011 by gnasher16
baw 4,360
I remember recently Gnasher you commented that the average fan doesn't bother with the money aspect of the game, he only bothers about whats on the field, now its pretty much all you talk about regarding Arsenal. Im not talking about what they won with clubs Malt im talking about as individual players....as individuals i think it would be hard to say Wenger let them go while they was at the top of their game....i remember an Arsenal pal of mine saying for the last 2 years Henry was there they should get rid of him. Dont know maybe im wrong.....but i think Wengers very shrewd where money for players is concerned

All I'll remember Henry for is cheating against rangers by using his hand to control the ball to score, I think he did the same against Ireland, not sure though.
