Whilst I admire your sentiment Ethyl. The time for sentiment has passed, what is needed is cold hard facts. People come on a forum and ask advice and it always seems to be after the fact. Would it not

Well would you not be better giving the lad your idea of what to do rather than telling everyone else theyre worng perhaps? Easy to sit there and be a smart arse the lads asked for advice not criticis

I like a dog that's not good with strangers Coz then people will think twice before stealing the dog and plus i like to think my dog will protect and help me if need be and I would have no problem muz

And I also think there's far to many 'point-and-shoot' lurchermen out there - who are only interested in getting to the 'slipping the dog' and 'killing the quarry' part of the game whilst paying scant regard to all the stuff that's necessary beforehand - ie, basic/advanced obedience and stockbeaking? Keep it locked up 'til it's ten months old then...oh, f**k me it's chasing/killing sheep!!! Just my opinion.

No i got rid of it because it has killed two sheep when its spent its whole life with them. I had pictures of him licking one of my sheeps face. What the f**k would you do like, keep him on his lead his whole life. People said get rid of him after the first time but i thought it was just a one off, you could see that he would do it no matter what the second time there was no getting it our of him

Keep it locked up, you havnt got a clue mate i made sure i spent an hour at least a day with that pup. His recall was spot on, jumping, going to where i point the lot. I spent a lot of time walking him yhrough sheep and was sure he was broke, i didnt come to this decision lightly you know he was my pride and joy.

Hey buddy - I'm not having a go at you personally - my above post is a general observation. However, no point having a go at me mate. I was one of the members who offered you what I consider was relatively sound advice. Which you basically failed to heed from what I can gather. I'd call it a day at this point mate...good luck.

Sorry u #idnt realise that. I was going to follow your advise but when he got hold of one the second time he just would not listen and was doing any thing he could do get back at it. Surely thers no going back from that.

lambs kile

yes , put the dog in with a ram ,,. but its to l8t now

Even that doesn't always work though, a mate of mine did that, I was there and thought the ram was going to kill it. Sure to cure it we both thought , feck me , it pulled a ewe down on the way back across the fields.

Thats what i believe my pup would have been like. When im stood in front of a sheep and hes pacing up and trying to get passed me what choice did i have, from a dog that has spent that much time with sheep for so long and been ok

I would NEVER trust my Saluki lurcher with sheep, despite the fact that he's been around them from a pup. He has always had that unholy look in his eye, his ears pricked at them even when they are the other side of a river. He's never had the chance to chase them (luckily where I actually work my dog there are no sheep: ever) but IMO the only thing that might work would be a severe dose of a shock collar, and even then, who knows. Saluki types aren't like Bull crosses or other lurchers with more 'domesticated' breeds in their make up, at least most Bull crosses can be brought up around sheep and do know that they aren't on the prey list, (if you are a sensible and strong minded owner), but a Saluki type is unpredictable: not all I'll admit, but many just can't be trusted to remember their lessons if a tasty prey animal jumps up in front of them. The phrase 'mutton headed' springs to mind, forgive the pun

If you are on the level, which I doubt. I am sorry that you lost your dog and that is genuine. However, there was no going back from the time you let it run and "play" with sheep, before the time it killed it's first lamb.

The time to act was then, any time after and it was just too late. Hitting a dog will not stop it chasing sheep, the only way to stop them is, never let them start.

Well thats where i have made my mistake and i take responsibility for that. I didnt realise that was the build up to it i thought it was a sign of having no aggression towards them. Im used ti collie crosses which are easy to stock break. Thats where i have let the poor lad down then.
