hi mate the tail docking can only be done with in the first 4 days of the pups been born you either need a shotgun certificate of a letter from the land owner to say you work the dogs on his land etc it will be down to the breeder if the pups get done

Okay, here we go..............

Scotland

There is a total ban on docking of any breed of dog

England - certain breeds and combinations can be docked

1. Hunt point retrieve breeds of any type or combination of types.

2. Spaniels of any type or combination of types.

3. Terriers of any type or combination of types.

Wales - certain breeds but not combinations

1. Spaniels of the following: English or Welsh Springer Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel, but NOT combinations of breeds

2. Terriers of the following: JRT, Cairn Terrier, Lakeland Terrier, Norfolk Terrier, NOT combinations of breeds

3. Hunt point retrievers of the following: Braque Italian, Brittany, German Long Haired Pointer, German Short Haired Pointer, German Wire Haired Pointer, Hungarian Vizsla, Hungarian Wire Haired Vizsla, Italian Spinone, Spanish Water Dog, Weimaraner, Korthals Griffon, Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer, Large Munsterlander, Small Munsterlander.

Also.........

*Puppies from certain working dogs may be docked ONLY if evidence is provided to the vet that they are likely to be worked in connection with law enforcement, Her Majestys Armed Forces, emergency rescue, lawful pest control, lawful shooting of animals.

*The dog must be less than 5 days old and the veterinary surgeon will have to certify that they've seen evidence that the dog is likely to work in specified areas. Puppies being docked must be microchipped, either at the time of docking or when the vet considers they are old enough.

* The owner of the dog (or person representing the owner) must make a signed statement that the dam of the pups to be docked is of a type which can be certified in the home nation, that they are of the correct age, that they are to be used or sold, for one of the working purposes detailed above.

* The vet must sign a declaration that the requirements of the regulations have been satisfied i.e. that he has been given the necessary declaration by the owner or person representing the owner and has seen the evidence required.

* The vet must have a completed statement, signed and dated by the owner of the dog (or by another person whom the veterinary surgeon to whom it is presented reasonably believes to be representing the owner), made in the form set out in the regulations. The vet must see the dam of the dog AND a further piece of evidence such as one of the following:

A current shotgun/firearm cert. issued to the owner of the dog (or agent/employee of the owner most likely to be using the dog for work in connection with the lawful shooting of animals); a letter from an allowed person (gamekeeper, land occupier or his agent, person with shooting rights, shoot organiser, club official, person representing National Working Terrier Federation, a person engaged in lawful pest control) stating that the breeder of the dog whose tail is to be docked is known to him and that dogs bred by that breeder have been used (as the case may be) on his land, or in his shoot, or for pest control.

Obviously it is at the discretion of the vet to actually do it IF you ask him... :whistling: .

Hope this helps.

i have just recently had a litter docked and only had to show letters from land owners

Yeah the above rules i posted are the strict letter of the law. Obviously they don't get followed exactly all the time! If it did we'd all be a bit bored... :whistling:

Hell you got a great deal!!! I have two JR done with rear DC removal and it cost me £70!!

My vet charges about £10 a pup to dock and take off front dew claws ( never get back dew claws)my present litter of 9 german wire haired pointers cost me £90 ,they are 4 weeks old now and coming on fine , but one vet i went to when the ban first came into force wanted to charge me £25 each pup pluss £20 to micro chip them and would not give me any paper work untill i took them back for docking, some vets just try to rip you off all the time ATB Drover

does a farmer have to pay a vet to dock lambs tails

Yes you would if they did dock lambs tails they would charge just to look at. them. I think i know what your getting at as farmers can dock their own lambs ( I farmed sheep befor i retired )you use a rubber ring to dock a lambs tail and it has to be put on within 24hrs of birth. Drover

im not getting at farmers drover if livestock or a working breed thats used for work need docked they should be docked why should a vet get £10 a pop when 500 sterilised rings and the tool to put them on would only cost a tenner
