Right Tyler, heres my post for you to re-read and see if it says anything about a hare crossed with a rabbit?

This 'fluffy' creature had me thinking the same thing a while back and the same comments of 'its a rabbit',however the back feet measured a whopping 13cm and the legs were much longer than rabbits etc also the ears were a little longer and thinner, the coat wasnt as coarse as a hare but nowhere near as smooth as a rabbit. All in I reckon its a crossbreed and perhaps thats what Gary has got too.

Oh yea thats right it doesnt, what it says is a crossbred hair or a cross bred rabbit, we all know there are plenty of cross bred rabbits and I have seen things in the past that resemble crossbred brown/blue hares.

Rabbits and hares could not cross breed because their genes would not support it as they are too far apart on the scale.

Sorry you seemed to be getting some flak, but when the lurcher section come on here all they do is talk bollocks, wind people up, then they go back to the dog section and do the same thing.

You may well be a decent genuine guy and your posts in this section will hopefully back that up over time.

Thats a fair point, i read it as meaning crossbred rabbit/hare but it could easily have meant wild/domestic, some thing i mentioned in my first post on the subject?

As for backing myself up as a decent guy to you lot, hardly. I've been on here years, never acted the twat or posted bullshit. I am a decent bloke and there are plenty on here who've met me and know it. Maybe you could have had a look through my posts before jumping in feet first.

For all i know you're the chav skank wandering round my area shooting cats and song birds with his airgun, but, i dont assume that you are just because you shoot an airgun. What makes you able to make such assumption based on the dogs i choose to keep?

Chill out guys..... Like I said before..... Rabbit....Hare.... Who cares as long it was taken cleanly and humanely.

As for the shooting of a Hare with an Air rifle before anyone mentions it.... It's frowned upon by some yes but totally legal in season!

We all have our own hobbies and views on things and at the end of the day it gets dark!!!

End of discussion!!

The debate was never about the rights or wrongs of shooting hares and, just so you know, hares dont have a closed season. If they did it would probably be now while they are breeding. What people choose to do on their own ground is down to them and their concience.

More importantly, Im getting a bit tired of this dogs vs guns thing. Everytime i post here i get the same old crap whether im right or wrong. Could everyone who doesnt like me because i run dogs and shoot, and therefore frequent both sections, please tell me exactly what their problem is? Ideally pointing out exactly what i've done wrong, that way i will know what im being tarred and feathered for. Perhaps threads with a sub title "airguns good lads club only" would help us riff raff to know where we are allowed to post?

Oh, and Markha, i see you've visited one of the finer threads on the lurcher section to have a pop at me. You'll now understand why i dont like the assumption that all lurchermen are the same lol

100% rabbits.

And just a point, some of the folk here always seem to moan about 'doggers coming on here and winding people up etc', but to be fair, it pretty much always seems to be one of them that starts flinging insults etc first. Just remember, when someone questions you, or what you do, or has a different opinion to you, they are not immediately 'on a wind up' or 'being a dick'. It's an open forum, despite some thinking this section is a private members club.

And as Tyla has said many times, a lot of folk use air guns, shot guns, catapults, dogs, ferrets, hawks and fishing rods etc. Or a combination of the above.

And no one was knocking the man for shooting a hare on a lamp / nv, although why you would i'm not sure, you could walk up to it, pick it up, and stick it in your game bag without wasting the pellet.

Jesus!!! I don't post on here much because I'd end up getting into rows everyday!!

Back in the day, we never had the internet. We had the Shooting News (now the Countrymans Weekly) there was a bit of banter between blokes but if you went out and did a bit, it didn't matter what you used, you were all in it together.

I shoot airguns (12 ftlbs and FAC), rifles (rimfire and fullbore), shotguns, I've had a 1lb puntgun, I've had longdogs and terriers, ferrets, birds of prey (broads wings and accipiters), I've followed hounds, I bowhunt and I shoot a catapult better than most. I've done a bit in a few counties.

My lamping started using an old taxi headlight and a 12 volt car battery in a rucksack. The reason why the antis have such an easy time causing grief and the government push through laws banning or restricting shooting sports and fieldsports is because no one sticks together. I'll defend anyone's right to use whatever method they want to hunt, even if I don't agree with it. Maybe everyone else should have a look at themselves and think about defending fieldsports asd a whole and not just their section of it, united we stand and all that. If airgun licensing is brought in, it won't affecgt me, I've already got airguns on ticket, but I'll fight tooth and nail to prevent it to protect those shooters who haven't got a licence and who wouldn't be able to get one for various reasons i.e. landlords not allowing a cabinet, finances, etc.

Now, that "hare" is a rabbit. a big old milky doe, look at the shape of the head. I've used NV, Gen 2+ and digital, it can be hard to ID quarry until you get used to what you are looking at. it was a clean kill and there's no taking that away. When I lived in Ireland, the boys there told me that you could get away with shooting your wife but never shoot a hare!! I've shot plenty of hares and run them with the dogs too. My only issue is, you need to be able to ID what you're shooting at. When it's dead it should be a simple thing to ID it but in fairness a lot of people have never seen a hare alive or dead. The problems arise when you're out foxing, walking through a field with cattle or sheep in and they've just calved/lambed, the grass is a little long in places and all of a sudden two eyes shine back at you, low to the ground, between a clump of grass, lamp or NV, you struggle to make it out but it's that low to the ground, it's got to be a fox but it could quite easily be a calf or lamb! I haven't just made this up, I was there when a guy nearly shot the face of a black and white calf doing the same thing.

I aint after a row (not that I'm bothered about having one!) I'm just saying, with the greatest respect.

Im going to step in here and add this to the mix:

Did you think this was some freak of nature just because it had big feet? I believe that sometimes there are localised colonies which have slightly different appearances to the norm. At a place I shoot in Riegate the rabbits all have short ears, about a third shorter than normal, they aren't a hybrid or abnormality, I think they are just from a closed gene pool and are line bred to have small ears.

Too many cliques on this forum on both sides, wouldnt it be nice if we all got along and respected each others sport?

it would be better still ,if some folk knew what animals they were shooting and killing.

Everyone makes mistakes, I've been at it over 25 years and I've made plenty. The trick is to listen to other people, ignore the crap and take the good advice. I've never been an idiot for making mistakes but I've been an idiot for ignoring those that knew more than me about certain things. Xxx

Yes mate ,they do , to mistake a leverett for a rabbit is easy to do, even in the day, but to have a dead rabbit in front of you, and believe it to be a hare, shows a complete lack of knowledge of two of the most abundant creatures in britain.
