Tyla 3,179
Thanks mate, i've seen a fair few of both live and dead so im well aware of the differences. It must be the picture, you've seen it for real so i'll take your word for it, but it doesnt look like a hare to me. Edited May 16, 2011 by Tyla Quote Link to post
pianoman 3,587
Definately a hare and great shooting again Gary. Spa to you mate. Simon Quote Link to post
yeeharr 41
In fairness to Tyla, that don't look like a hare to me. The rabbits in the background are small, starters, but that hare, hasn't got hare's legs or hare's ears and the head doesn't look much like a hare's. I know that photo's can be decieving but that's how it looks to me. Good shooting though, whatever it is!! Edited May 17, 2011 by yeeharr Quote Link to post
herdwick 52
This is a hare. What you shot was a rabbit. Quote Link to post
markha 99
Im going to step in here and add this to the mix: This 'fluffy' creature had me thinking the same thing a while back and the same comments of 'its a rabbit',however the back feet measured a whopping 13cm and the legs were much longer than rabbits etc also the ears were a little longer and thinner, the coat wasnt as coarse as a hare but nowhere near as smooth as a rabbit. All in I reckon its a crossbreed and perhaps thats what Gary has got too. Quote Link to post
Tyla 3,179
Hares and rabbits dont cross breed. If anything the two in question could have a dash of domestic rabbit blood thats pushed the size up. To me they just look like big rabbits. Perhaps there should be a picture next to each species in the general quarry list thats pinned above, just for anyone struggling with quarry identification? Its certainly good practice to know what species your about to shoot. Quote Link to post
Marksman 934
What does it matter if it's a hare or rabbit. He shot it cleanly, job done!! Darryl Quote Link to post
rascal_2005 79
na, thats not a hare mate, good shooting all the same Quote Link to post
Tyla 3,179
What does it matter if it's a hare or rabbit. He shot it cleanly, job done!! Darryl True to a point. Absolutely nothing wrong with the shooting at all, cleanly killed no doubt. In fact, im pleased it was a rabbit and not a hare but we'll skirt round that one . On the otherhand i do think its better on the whole to know what it is your shooting at before you pull the trigger. That said, its an easy mistake to make on the lamp, nevermind using night vision. No offence meant just stated what i saw Quote Link to post
markha 99
Tyla, On the lamp, night vision, mistake! get back to the lurcher section where if it bolts its fair game for your dogs regardless of what it is! Sorry if your not like that at all, however its a big brush and your gona get tared. The guys on here know their stuff, it wasn't a debate about whether its a hare or rabbit except for its size, like wise my pic from last year, there are anomalies in nature and I'm sure both pictures show them. Nice one Darryl, yea, clean humane kill regardless and Im sure Gary knows how to identify quarry species correctly whether on the lamp or with NV. Quote Link to post
rascal_2005 79
but why would you tar him? there was no menace at all in his posts and he was trying to help the guy out, after all youngsers do get on here and he was just trying to clear up species indetification. like i said before, i dont think its a hare but thats just my opinion. no need for arguments. john boy Quote Link to post
Marksman 934
In Marks defence mate we tend to get it in thus section from time to time with "the doggers" popping in having a go at winding people up so they all seem to get tarred with the same brush. Take it from me mate. Wor kid doesn't need helping out with recognition. We've both been hunting since a young age and know the difference and he's also a pest controller by trade. Although I wasn't there this time I can vouch for him 100%. But as Mark said telling the difference between a flattened down rabbit and Hare through NV is nigh on impossible. If it was in fact a rabbit then I hope they're all that abnormally big when I go back to the same permission. Quote Link to post

Nice one Darryl, yea, clean humane kill regardless and Im sure Gary knows how to identify quarry species correctly whether on the lamp or with NV. Thats not very fair mate but im getting used to it. I run my dogs on legal quarry and can call them off when i choose, im not the kind of moronic killer with a pack of slavering dogs you lot would like me to be. No doubt there are wrong 'uns with lurchers but the airgun world isnt without its pricks, see the swans and cygnets post, but you dont see me tarring you all with the same brush do you? The bigotry here is getting beyond a joke. At no point have i been abusive or patronising and yet i still get this shit just because i run a lurcher. You dont know me, i've been shooting for years before i got into dogs and still do. I make no apologies for my sport to you, to antis, to anyone and nor should anyone have to. I know what quarry is what but im well aware that under NV conditions mistakes can be made, as i stated earlier. It wasnt a big deal i just pointed out what i thought was a simple mistake. I should have known the airgun section fascists would turn up to put the boot in if anyone dared have an opinion that wasnt "nice one mate", "good shooting" etc. Heaven forbid someone with a lurcher dare to have an opinion on an open forum. As far as "knowing your stuff" was it not you that thought the two animals in question were hare/rabbit crossbreeds? Sounds like you really understand your quarry Quote Link to post
