Met up with my good mate FD for a look about yesterday evening after throwing together a last minute trip out. Weather looked like it could go either way but if you don't go you don't know and all that. Got to the location around 7.30 and promptly kitted up and set off. Its a great spot mainly laid to mixed grazing and criss crossed with thick hedges which leans down to a fenced plantation alongside a train-track. As has been discussed before on the forum - the policy of having 7ft deer fences is great but totally bloody pointless next to a train track where the track side has to be left open

The weather seemed to make up its mind and the sun poked through highlighting the areas where you expect to see the deer. As we approached the plantation aiming for a gap in the hedge a cock pheasant gave us away and we stopped to glass for movement. A flicker of a ear betrayed an older Doe in the plantation but she was away almost immediatly so we moved to the gap and waited a few minutes to let things settle down. Another doe appeared with a buck right behind her - he was almost mistaken for muntjack as he was so low to the ground lapping up her scent which I would have thought is a bit premature. As they moved past FD gave the nod to take him so it was up on the sticks and several wistles were needed to get him to snap out of his pursuit. The 6.5 sang and down he went to a lung shot at around 70 meters.

Got him in the roe sack and climbed over the 7ft gate which made the legs wobble a bit and made a brisk pace to a lay up spot where FD had observed a buck making territory rounds earlier in the month. The sun was already down and we were left with the fading dusky light when we spotted him against a hedgerow some 250 meters away. FD was off like a ferret up a trouser leg and began what looked to be a difficult stalk over the open ground. I was against a 5-Bar gate watching the progress through my binos, ranging every now and then with the leica. When FD was 160 meters away the buck couched down leaving only his head in view. FD continued on with more urgency as there was literally minutes of shootable light left. At 60 meters the buck stood up standing broadside, FD took his time and I saw the muzzel flash followed by a crack-thump  A bloody good stalk and a nice buck down.

The photo's are crap as I had to use my phone but hopefully FD has some better ones.

We were now left with a logistical problem on how to get these two back to the truck... one which FD has had before when out with Martin.. enough to insist that it was a guests privilage :toast: FD Reminded me that I had the roe-sack and with the Harkila promo material stating "Two roe or one large Sika" I new I was in for a leg burner :icon_eek: I put my game-face on and skipped the long, uphill way back to the truck  You'l have to use some imagination on the last pic as it was near black by the time we had them packed and the pic was from my from my phone.

Thanks again FD mate :victory:

      Hey Hunting Life Community,
I'm a professional hunter or a team member from Gunners' Review, and I'm excited to join this passionate group of hunters!
I’d love to hear about your most unforgettable hunting experiences. Whether it was your first big game, a hunt with an unexpected twist, or a day that taught you something new, share your stories with us!
      Here are a few prompts:
What made your hunt memorable? Any unexpected challenges? Gear or techniques that helped you succeed? Lessons learned or tips for others? To start, my most unforgettable hunt was in the rugged mountains of Colorado, where I tracked a massive elk through dense forest and steep terrain. The highlight was successfully using my GPS and spotting scope to locate and approach the elk without being detected. My trusty .30-06 Springfield rifle, paired with a Leupold scope, ensured a clean and ethical shot. The thrill of the chase and the satisfaction of a well-executed hunt made it an experience I'll never forget.
Can't wait to hear your stories and learn from your adventures!
      Happy hunting,

      Hello!
I'd love to learn more people's opinions on deer hunting using dogs, as it's a very controversial topic in the hunting world. I've only ever used dogs for grouse and waterfowl hunting, but many hunters also use for deer. I write a little hunting blog on the side for fun (this is not an ad, there is no ad/affiliate on the blog but let me know if I can't link!) and I really want to write about the dog hunting controversy.
What are your opinions? For or against, why, why not etc? No judgement, just trying to get the general hunting population's opinions!
      God Bless!

Trip last Saturday to West Sussex in that evil storm, flooded roads, crazy winds .
The usual warm welcome and off out to be dropped in a high seat.3o mins later saw a little white bum ,bins  up it's a  Roe buck Doe and fawn .
Shot the fawn ,nice size Doe and waited but the other  Doe didn't return to her fawn .Green out ,healthy gralloch .
Back to the Bothy, fawn in the chilled and bald bloke to local for a nice nosh.
5am already up ,tea and biscuits meet the other guests and out .Unsuccessful hour in a different seat and off on foot to see a massive buck 10m away. Took the heart shot ,he ran and dropped. This can't be right he was massive, this is a spiker.
Me tit, scope on 9 not 0 so at 10m he looked huge .Nice clean gralloch, and luckily the guide was with me as he was a fat boy to carry.
      Great weekend, good craic,great friends
