morton 5,368
The main trouble with judging a show is all the entrants genuinely believe their dog was better than the winner, then all the bitching starts.ive judged a few lurchers and the biggest problem i found was the poor condition of a lot of the dogs,no matter what they looked like from outside the ring.I judged Blanchland a couple of years ago and was disgusted with the condition of some,i gave the best in show to Church's bullcross,i don't like bullcrosses but on the day itwas that or a little rough bitch,i really would have liked to have given the shield to the little one,but i went with what i thought would have been the better option in the field.Stobbard asked me to judge a bullcross class at another show the year after,i gave 1st,2nd and 3rd to the only dogs out of about 20 that felt and looked like they worked. If you cannot gracefully accept a judges verdict, right or wrong then don't enter. the dogs that looked and felt like they work? just bye touch alone how can you tell a dog works when you judge it in the middle of summer? do you know a secret I dont? some kind of wart or mole given to workers by the lord? An adult lurcher that as seen acouple of seasons work, especially bull crosses, will normally carry a certain amount of wear and tear, some a little over obvious.A dog underweight, out of condition, flat footed with long toenails, full of fleas and worms are another clue.A dog in good condition, showing signs of a working life, being held by an owner who comes out with the right answers will get the nod from me. birddog 1,354
ive judged a few times over the years always been honest even put up crosses that im not a fan of but they were on the day in my opinion the best, ive gave everyone a fair crack at the whip and spoken to all owner / handlers. at a recent show which was a great day, lots of crack, many old pals, the odd bargain or two at the stalls etc my 13year old entered a genuine working bitch and came out of the ring with a rossette but was really dissapointed, the judge hadn't said a word to him, didn't ask the dogs name, age or breeding, didn't look at the dogs mouth or teeth, didn't look at toes or feet. i'm all for shows lets have a bit of fun, some banter, meet friends old and new but for some guys who have travelled a long way surely the organisers can get somebody who even if their not that good at the job can at least pretend that they know what their about. boyo 1,398
ive judged quite a lot of shows over the years and can honestly say not one person has admitted that their lurcher doesnt work but ime grown up enough to take what they tell me about their dog with a pinch of salt and judge purely whats in front of me on the day .and as i said earlier there is no way in the world you can tell if a dog works by looking at it . boyo 1,398
birddog gotta agree with you on the good home comment but most of the injuries you mentioned they can get just running round without ever working mind you like i said if you ask the owners every dog in a show is a working lurcher .lol. It’s not a bad little show, shame they have no working class and a bull class would be nice as well. I was trying to remember a class of three and what dog came third. I have an idea of your dog as a young Merle beardy/beddy type? Fun should be the idea, with a chance to see a few different dogs and have a chat with people. Judging is a matter of personal choice and what suits one will not suit another, but an honest judge will at least pick what they feel is the best although there are those that pick the owners rather then the dog as they know that the owner will be the judge at the next show. There is a tendency for the pony club element to take over and they seem to align themselves well with those who prefer to race their lurchers than work them but they are often the ones who are willing to take on the hassle to organise shows. It can be a bit of a shame when you do get a small clique that dominate local shows, judging and awarding amongst themselves and it is always refreshing when a judge is brought in from outside and upsets the apple cart a little. For youngsters with their first lurchers it can be disheartening for the dogs to get passed over at these shows and so they stop attending and this is a loss, I’ve been to a couple of shows this year and noticed two such people, both with tidy young lurchers, that have entered and not done well, on Sunday one attended but didn’t even enter and next year is unlikely to even attend. We should be encouraging these people. 1 Quote Link to post
