inan 841
ive judged quite a lot of shows over the years and can honestly say not one person has admitted that their lurcher doesnt work but ime grown up enough to take what they tell me about their dog with a pinch of salt and judge purely whats in front of me on the day .and as i said earlier there is no way in the world you can tell if a dog works by looking at it . not quite so sure mate, many working dogs have bust toes, ruptured tendons, maybe a dropped muscle, the odd scar especially around the ears and in my experience a lot of real, good working dogs have an aura about them almost looking down on lesser dogs, and some of mine are really peeved at having to ponce about at a stupid show when their minds are obviously far away on more important matters. i'd rather sell a puppy to a good honest knowledgable show home than to a messer working home where the pup would be ruined by 8 month old and moved on to end god knows where. Ive judged quite a few shows, and twice with Boyo, he is as good a judge as I have seen ,imo. Injuries on a dog do not have to indicate hard work, they can also indicate a clumsy sod who gets hurt climbing out of his bed. Anyone showing a dog with a dropped muscle ,ruptured tendon, or busted toe, is being seriously optimistic if they expect to win over a comparable animal, that has none of these injuries. We've all seen dogs with flat feet, busted toes ect, catch game , but how much better would they run if they had four sound feet? End of the day, Lurcher shows cannot give an indication of a dog's working ability. Whilst judging ,I've never had an exhibitor say to me,"oh its just a pet it doesn't work",they are all regular pot fillers, according to their owners. Quote Link to post

1 man and hiz dog 1
The judges job is a poison chalice, you are on a hiding to nothing from the start and the reason its so hard to find one,ask anyone who's put a show on the trouble they have finding a judge, hence the reason why you get inexperienced wannabe's doing it,nobody likes to take flak off fellow dog owner's for either a biased decision or a straight one,the fun element of these shows have been lost, going back 30yrs there was only one gamefair and no local terrier and lurcher shows,it is only as the dog's have become popular that these shows appeared, the Fell and Moorland ran the first show's I attended and it was as a fund raising excercise to claw back some of the money that was outlayed in the winter on some of the bigger rescue's,they were our only fallback and are still the only decent club worth joining or contributing to with genuine interest in the welfare of our dog's,anyone that remember's the massive shows that brought LLangollen to a standstill of a weekend will realise it was a great meeting place for old friends and new alike,it is only a bit of fun and not to be argued and fought over,go to the shows for the right reasons and enjoy the company of like minded lads that will be raising money for a good cause (normally) and if you don't enjoy it then you are there for the wrong reasons, remember your dog will always be the best in YOUR eye's,don't take the day too serious and you will meet some decent people and make new friends, you will get better quality judges coming forward when they stop taking too much stick, after all WOULD YOU DO IT ??? atb, wirralman very we'll said Quote Link to post
