coney clucky 93
I love shows there's nowt funnier that some fat prat in cammo gear prancing around the ring with his pride and joy half drunk then spitting the dummy out....priceless. You have to feel sorry for the judges though, no matter how honest they are there's always gonna be a lot of pissed of folk. Seen one guy approach a judge and offer him a square go cause he didn't get a place. i went to shows mate thinking same as you but it wasnt fun to nany people taking what was i thought a bit fun deadly serious lot of slagging dogs and people of maybe at some shows its diffrent im not as some people say on here a moaning attention seeker id never been to shows and only took my scared up dog as i had aranged to stud him with a bitch after show and met the owner at the show any one on here who knows me will tell you im no attention seeker or moaning git just wasnt ezpecting the show seen to be so competitive or serious and judges to be so inconsistent Quote Link to post

Snifferboy 659
The judges job is a poison chalice, you are on a hiding to nothing from the start and the reason its so hard to find one,ask anyone who's put a show on the trouble they have finding a judge, hence the reason why you get inexperienced wannabe's doing it,nobody likes to take flak off fellow dog owner's for either a biased decision or a straight one,the fun element of these shows have been lost, going back 30yrs there was only one gamefair and no local terrier and lurcher shows,it is only as the dog's have become popular that these shows appeared, the Fell and Moorland ran the first show's I attended and it was as a fund raising excercise to claw back some of the money that was outlayed in the winter on some of the bigger rescue's,they were our only fallback and are still the only decent club worth joining or contributing to with genuine interest in the welfare of our dog's,anyone that remember's the massive shows that brought LLangollen to a standstill of a weekend will realise it was a great meeting place for old friends and new alike,it is only a bit of fun and not to be argued and fought over,go to the shows for the right reasons and enjoy the company of like minded lads that will be raising money for a good cause (normally) and if you don't enjoy it then you are there for the wrong reasons, remember your dog will always be the best in YOUR eye's,don't take the day too serious and you will meet some decent people and make new friends, you will get better quality judges coming forward when they stop taking too much stick, after all WOULD YOU DO IT ??? atb, wirralman Thats a fair point Edited May 15, 2011 by Snifferboy Quote Link to post
dennned 172
If a rosette is that important then go buy a pedigree breed, a waistcoat, bow tie and start practicing your "ring mince" with what appears to be a barbed hook inserted in your anus....... so delicatley put simon ---- but yes your spot on , ffs it's only fun, meeting old and new friends , much more fun----den Quote Link to post
morton 5,368
The main trouble with judging a show is all the entrants genuinely believe their dog was better than the winner, then all the bitching starts.ive judged a few lurchers and the biggest problem i found was the poor condition of a lot of the dogs,no matter what they looked like from outside the ring.I judged Blanchland a couple of years ago and was disgusted with the condition of some,i gave the best in show to Church's bullcross,i don't like bullcrosses but on the day itwas that or a little rough bitch,i really would have liked to have given the shield to the little one,but i went with what i thought would have been the better option in the field.Stobbard asked me to judge a bullcross class at another show the year after,i gave 1st,2nd and 3rd to the only dogs out of about 20 that felt and looked like they worked. If you cannot gracefully accept a judges verdict, right or wrong then don't enter. 4 Quote Link to post
Snifferboy 659
I went to a working terrier and lurcher show today for something different to do, it was good to see that there are a good amount of nice looking dogs in my area, the judge seemed fair i got a third place for my dog..... out of 3! But it is all about not taking it too seriously..... I just need to get hold of that judges address so I can go chuck bog roll all over his house the b*****d!!!! Can't wait for the next show I'm gonna take some potatoes to stuff up judges exhaust pipe!!! Quote Link to post

6pack 60
I enjoy the shows. Lurcher shows are not as serious as the Borzoi showing, but much more fun to win. With no set standard and such variations around, it's all down to a judges personal preference. Unfortunately working ability can not be measured in a ring. It's also a good opportunity and experience for the dogs. Quote Link to post

boyo 1,398
scars are and never have been a sign that your dog works and there is no way can you tell if a dog works or not by handling it in any way shape or form all you can judge it on is its conformation condition and looks and give an honest appraisal in your veiw on which are the three best dogs you have just looked at and examined .also they can look a whole lot differant outside the ring looking in to when you actually put your hands over them and check them out . SPOTTY BACKED BIG RACK 90
I can honestly say in my lifetime I have never been able to tell how a lurcher performs in the field by looking at it or feeling it. Scares mean nothing as to a dogs working standard especially if its not worked on quarry which bite back not all dogs are or should I say were!!! So what does that leave the judge to judge a working dog on? personel preference with looks and physical condition if its done honestly. 2 Quote Link to post
