dogs that pull up,

Recommended Posts

This could be a bit contravertial for my 1st topic,

what do you people do with dogs that pull up,?Do you keep them for breeding or do you sell them on ??

what is the usually reason why a dog pulls up time and time again,

breeding??

early entering?

or just plain and simple just hasnt got what it takes, even the dog could be to clever??

my oppinion in what ive seen is its the breeding more often then not its the lineage of the dog you will usely find siblings do it out of the litter and its auntys and uncles do it

be nice to hear peoples oppinions on this.

Could be a number of reasons. My Whippet/Greyhound pulls up due to a few bad accidents in cover, but to be fair most of the time rabbits don't make cover and really if she carried on the way she was going she would probably be dead by now, tissue paper skin running dog  .

I have the same problem with my own dog and to be honest it can be very frustrating. the problem is he only does it on rabbits, anything else he ploughs on in.

Pull up at cover yeah? My dog will only do it on rabbits, anything else he follows straight in . . . . but then he's a clever dog, if he looks down a field and see's hundreds of bunnies sat a few feet from cover, he doesn't even look twice, he knows they'll be gone and therefore a waste of his time. It doesn't really worry me either way to be honest.

a lot of dogs that work with bushing terriers during the day are so used to rabbits just bouncing into the ditch before they can get near them so they learn not to bother but dogs that are ran on places like golf courses and playing fields are usualy soared from missing so many on such quick ground and there are others that are just burnt out and have no interest anymore

You should know your dogs limit and be able to read the signs to prevent a dog from jacking. Obviously you need to push them to the limit to find where the limit is. But a lot of different factors come into it. I do think a lot of it comes down to the breeding. I know I wouldn't be happy buying a pup from a known jacker but how much is down to the owner.... Tricky one.

Breeding can play a part for sure, as can early entering and then exeperience can play a part. My eldest will now pull up on cover at night on the lamp, but then he had ran full tilt into a lamb creep feeder. In the daytime he knows that that lunge into cover is often successfull and he wont stop.
