bike excersising

Recommended Posts

Keeping a dog fit using a bike will make no difference to the working life of a lurcher, if anything it will help as the dog is less likely to incur muscle injuries if its running fit, exercise is like anything else, moderation and common sense..........

as said above makes no difference aslong as done in moderation and the key word commonsense, i also find it helps keep the nails down and tightens the feet up abit if done on tarmac, i only started using a bike this season just gone due to loosing my licience and couldnt get em out as much as i normally do, i was told by someone that it can ware the pads and make them sore, but after a while would then harden up a bit? i no of a kennel huntmans that used to put rock salt down in the hounds kennels a week before they started exercise on the roads to harden the pads up

I'm doing at least 5 miles at the moment with half fit dogs, mostly off road: they love it. Trotting beside a bike is a much more natural speed for a dog to do than human walking pace. Friend of mine does 7-10 miles before the start of the season and his dogs are super fit and he runs them on testing quarry hard all season and his oldest is 6years old and still knocking them over very well. Trotting won't build galloping stamina but it is the best way to keep them reasonably fit off season and a semi fit dog is easier to get really fit than one that has laid around all summer doing nothing.
