Some real newbie questions

Recommended Posts

There isn't really a 'better' mate, as its down to the individual dog, but i would say both a springer (being a scent dog) and a beddie x (being a terrier based lurcher) would take to marking fairly easily. I'd go for a beddy x over a springer for what you want as it would both be able to mark, and also help while ferreting, do some ratting if needed, run on the lamp, work cover to the gun if trained right, and are fairly easy to get on with. Just make sure its out of working stuff

You seem them about a bit, they are pretty popular these days, but its getting a decent one. See quite a lot of half x beddy whips and 3/4 bred beddy whips, less beddy x grey. Me personaly i'd go for a pup out of beddy x / beddy x, with both parents working, of a 3/4 bred dog, as finding decent beddys to make a 1st x can be tough. imo.

Hi all

i must appologies first for my complete lack of knowlege but i am new to lurchers.

my question is. is a lurcher any good for a pest controler? what are they like to live with? should i look at somthing else?

the reason i am asking is i am about to start training to become a pest controler and i would like to encorporate a dog into my work as i have always liked having a dog around and i currently own an aging labrador (it sound awfull) but it wont be longe before i will be looking for a new dog. i obviously have looked at ratting terriers as well but i like more medium sized dogs.

many thanks

SAM

What better a beddy/ greyhound or a beddy/ whippet?

No real 'better', just personal preferance. And for what you need a beddy x whip would probably suffice in size.

I'm working all kinds of terrain, it's tha nature of my job. I would be properly working it maybe a few times a week. It would also be able to wander around farms an estates with me. So I want this dog to live the life a lurcher should.
