morton 5,368
Because of the hunting ban you will have limitations on what you use the dog on,as part of your work you will have to stay strictly within the law. Many pest controllers use dogs to assist them,id go for a smaller type whippet cross.Out of work hours you may wish to broaden your hunting as you will not face the same restrictions. dabigmc 23
Knew a fella years ago who kept a straight half patterdale x whippet...seen it catching rabbits,it was lightening fast and with the heart and gameness of a lion! I think something like that would be ideal for that sort of work! Quote Link to post

sighthound1811 6
if i was you i would steer clear of anything thats maybe gonna grow too big, deerhound, saluki types etc...as you previously mentioned a collie or beddie cross would prob suit you for rabbit an rat, dogs wi a good bit of collie in them tend to be quite easy to train owing to the intelligence of the collie....there also capable of taking other quarry as well if you let them,my young dog is comin on great an has both collie an beddie in him..hes a collie/whippet/greyXbeddie/whippet.....just make sure the pup you buy is off parents who work....atb in your search mate...chris.. Ideation 8,216
To be fair i'd think the most important role any lurcher could play for a pest controller would be marking, rather than catching. Just because if you got called to lamp some rabbits you would be better using a gun than a dog, as that's be more efficient. Marking would save you money and time with gassing though, and also if there were spots you had to ferret it could be incorporated there, and a lurcher will also kill rats, but you would mostly be using poisons there anyway. 1 Quote Link to post
sjb york 1
Yes I agree, marking would be the most use for many of my jobs. Is a lurcher still the best? or can most "gun" or "poaching" dogs mark well? For example could a springer or lab mark up sites? Cheers Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
I'd go for a terrier based lurcher. Maybe a beddy x.Or a collie x as they are very nice dogs to have about anyway. Quote Link to post
sjb york 1
I'm really unterested in a bedlington- lurcher. Are they good for marking? Better than something like a springer? What is there temperament like? Quote Link to post
