sweeper 156
i personally prefer line bred dogs due to the fact that in most cases youve personally seen the dogs generations progress to what you have now but i struggle to understand properly what it takes for a line to be YOURS has whatever dog you start with came from somebody else...????any views from more knowlegable folk appreciated but this said you carnt beat a 1st x for allround proper work afterall thats where these line bred dogs started surley? regards Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,216
I'd say in general line bred, assuming you can go back a decent way, say 3 gens, and see that you have good dogs, it should in theory throw more litter consistency, if you use the right types of dogs. I.e half x to half x etc etc etc if you pick the right dogs can produce a litter of bigger dogs (example) consistently across a litter, than a straight 1st x. How that sound? Quote Link to post
DogMagic 461
I wouldnt want to start from scratch. If you mate a pure grey to a pure collie for example you will get some that throw to the grey and some that throw to the collie. The ones that throw to the grey will be worth a look. Some make it and most wont. If your VERY lucky the one you picked will be the one that does make it. Others will throw to the collie and not be something i would want other than to further x with, perhaps to a pure. Line breeding is a much better bet in my opinion. You take a dog that is doing the business and a bitch that is doing the business and put them together. The resulting puppies should ALL be worth a look rather than just some and MOST will probably be capable of putting on a good show and at least one should be the bollox. Hopefully that will be the one youve picked out. If not it should still be a goodun. I have a collie grey dog that is doing the business. I am more than happy with him. I wont say what he does but he does everything i ask of him and he does it with style! I also have a young saluki, grey, whippet x whippet bitch. She is showing great promise. To young to say but so far i have every confidence in her. She is fast as fook, turns on a 6 pence and has stamina in places most dogs dont even have places! Lol! Now in a couple of years, if she does come good i will be putting the collie grey over her without a doubt. And i will certainly be keeping a pup out of the mating and i will KNOW its going to turn out above avarage because i wont put them together unless she turns out to be as good as my collie grey. In a nut shell i see line breeding as the only way to go. Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
The only thing with line breeding, is it IS handy when someone else manages to produce a cracking 1/2 or 3/4 bred dog or bitch, or the line breeding thing can go to pot. Quote Link to post

poacher3161 1,766
I always found it funny that D.B.Plummer would always promote f1x and 3 quarter breds in his books but kept close line bred lurchers himself. Quote Link to post

moonlighter 1,164
So here's a question, if you was breeding coursing dogs, would you rather use a good working dog, but from unknown parents or would you rather use a dog from the best blood lines available, but is only a pet and has never been worked? And I don't mean a failed worker, but one thats never been tested. There is a big difference between the two. Quote Link to post
