Tallyho 181
this one is for ditch, we used to catch a lot of mink in traps very similar, but we found that if you leave the bottom of the traps like they are they wouldnt go in, so we covered the bottoms, with a bit of fish in and as soon as we caught one , we caught about 11 maybe 12 after that, but like i said they would not go in a trap that they could feel the wire bottom, no matter what we put in there, so try covering the bottoms, it might help it might not , but you dont know untill you try. See my Thread presently and ye'll see why I agree 100% with what ye suggesting here. Bugger! Another wasted night! Quote Link to post

See my Thread presently and ye'll see why I agree 100% with what ye suggesting here. Bugger! Another wasted night! I saw the forum was about catching mink....I have been snaring most of my mink in 3/64 snares with a 3 inch loop about 3 fingers off the ground. I also use conibears (kill traps) and foot traps. I realize that over in the UK that some of these are not permitted. My best season is 66. I also use a mink call /gland lure that I buy here in the US that seems to work real well on foxes. Well that's another story... Quote Link to post
Guest Ditch_Shitter
Vic' Vix; I'm the World Past Master at failing to snare a bloody mink! Check back enough pages in this Board and ye'll come up with it. A truly Legenday Thread of one mans abject and miserable failure, despite my trying most of last year to get the hang of it! (Groan! No pun intended there, honestly!) I had the best advisors. Best kit and best intentions. Never so much as found a black hair in one So now, what with the fact that I'm trying to dodge our Protected Martens, I've gone over to cage trapping. And, guess what? I'm f*cking useless at that too! Anyway, see my own, more recent and current Thread. I'm about to try boarding under my cage. (One step at a time, see?) If That doesn't work? I have here a bottle of Carmen's Mink Gland Lure and I'll be adding that next Incidentally; Tastes disgusting beyond words or belief, doesn't it?! Quote Link to post
NightRunner 0
You guys have all those rabbits. Use a big FRESH piece no tainted bait. A mink will want that meat even if they were full. You ever hear of a bottom edge set??? Quote Link to post

NightRunner 0
Lets say your walking down a sidewalk and someone has left a gate open thats sticking out into the sidewalk. You just walk around it. Well in the water that gate can be a stump, a large rock, a sharp point or even a slow curve in the river bank. Your coni goes right up tight to that spot and on the bottom. Mink, muskrats and beavers will many times stay right tight to thoes points and swim around them hugging close to them. Most times the waters moving slower right there so its eaiser swimming for them and its said that they don't know for sure whats around that point so they just stay real close to it. Sort of like poking your head around a corner to see whats on the other side. A bottom edge can also be right up aginst a bridge wall also. I like to use 160's for these sets up untill beaver and otter season comes in then I will jump up a few sizes at a few locations. Early season will find you cleaning out a bunch of leaves from your traps but later season these sets will help put fur in your shed. I also like to stack these sets with one trap right on the bottom and one trap half out of the water. Theres a lot of rats that like to swim right tight to the bank but on the surface.
