A greyhound put to a 7/8 greyhound 1/8 collie, if thats what im reading is a waste of time, may aswell buy a pure greyhound pup imo...... Be better off putting it to a collie lurcher with a proven track record, far too many folk get hung up on speed in the lurcher, it needs enough but there are far more important attributes, strike, feet, hunting ability, its as much use as a tit on a boar if the dog is fast enough but dont catch...............

plenty of real fast ones can catch for fun and theres plenty of slow ones that are useless and complete waste of time. depends on the dog and work put in to it when its learning its trade .

I still believe that speed is the main attribute in Lurcher breeding; if the dog can't get up to it's quarry, then everything else; strike, turning, etc, is immaterial !! The whole reason we use Greyhound in Lurcher breeding is for one thing only... SPEED !! Of course you can have to much Greyhound in a line; after all, just about any Greyhound will have the speed to do the job, but that speed needs to be aligned with the attributes of the other breeds to make a succesful Lurcher. My oppinion is once you get over 3/4 Greyhound in the line, that's a bit to much. I personaly like around 50% Greyhound in a Lurcher.

surely the ammount a grey ye use in a line would depend on the other breeds also involved.........

Yeah; I would agree with that ! If you were using a terrier or collie bred bitch... use a bit more Greyhound in the sire; if you were using a Whippet or Saluki or Deerhound bred bitch.. maybe not so much Greyhound blood ! Everyone has there own idea's on breeding.

Interesting topic - will keep you posted how my pup goes in her first season as sh'es just under 3/4greyhound if you work purely on what sire and dam are. 1/2 greyhound, 3/8th whippet, 1/8th deerhound x 3/4 greyhound 1/4 whippet so by my reckoning 10/16 grehound, 5/16 whippet and 1/16 deerhound - I think the important thing is both parent are excellent workers - so I'm hoping she'll turn out fine.

the biggest problem i see in people having

3/4 grey and more is that no matter how good the dog is

even if it is not looking too much like a grey hound

and a top class worker its self

when breeding comes around all you get is hairy greyhounds

lets face it grey hounds are not what they once where

my opinion is to keep it lurcher to lurcher from workers.

if any dog caught most of what he caught up on he would be good

so many lurchers have been ruined with to much grey hound
