how much greyhound is too much in a lurcher

Recommended Posts

a lad asked me today if i know of a decent greyhound to cover his 7/8 collie greyhound she is a good little bitch on rabbits and fox but lacks a bit in stamina .i told him he might be over doing the greyhound side of things and that he would be better off with maybe a 1st x collie/greyhound or maybe 3/4 but all he wants to breed for is speed as he reckons it will produce bigger bags

I personally think he should breed to a coursing dog or a lamping dog myself depending what he is wantin to do.

If he is getting into the racing side or things l go for whippet x greyhound and it do him for lamping as well

he wants te pups to be classed as collie greyhounds but i think if he puts full greyhound over the bitch that you could hardly even class them as lurchers anymore the pups would be15/16 greyhound 1/16 collie.how many times can ye put full greyhounds in the mix before they are eventualy full greyhound pups

Well he needs o find a 3/4 bred collie greyhound then, pups should have more than enough speed for rabbits and lets face it its not always about speed for lamping bunnies

I hunted pure and 7/8th ,I was lucky as both dogs were very good at there jobs. But both constantly when hunted hard had the typical high % Greyhound problems, were the 3/4 and 5/8 didnt. I would stick with a 3/4 type bred stud and pick the pup or pups wisely.

Sounds like pretty good advice even comin from some fag out of New York City! :feck:

Depends on the job you want it to do and I’d expand to sight-hound rather than just grey ie whippet, saluki, deerhound. If it’s to parade in the show ring and chase a plastic back then there is no upper limit and a pure grey/sight-hound would be a good choice, if it’s to run the lamp then ¾ sight hound works well, if it’s to watch nets while ferreting etc the maybe half sight hound, if to run big rabbits on big fields then all sight hound ‘ I’d go for something like saluki x grey. Horses for courses and a little personal choice.

Put any more sighthound into that 7/8 grey collie lurcher and in my mind...... It stops being a lurcher.

Sounds more to me like he hasn't got it clear in his mind what he wants...... Either a rossette chaser or something that will endure a seasons graft.

If his 7/8 cross is lacking speed or stamina, then it's not for breeding from. Seen a couple of lurchers with more collie in that 1/8 that were fast enough to stand their ground against your average non Ped and last a good shift in the field. But they obviously came from faster stock than your mates dogs.

Some dogs are simply fast!...... I would suggest he try looking for a dog from known fast lines, if speed counts rather than breed a sub standard speed machine from his own dog.

the bitch is fast sometimes too fast over shooting rabbits and having to make up a lot of ground on the turns but she is a decent lamping bitch and can tackle a red fella with ease but i think he has seen sence now and is using a 1st cross wheaton greyhound on the bitch that is an excellent all rounder and has sired some very good deer and fox dogs so she will be going down to that dog in the next few days and if all goes well i might be picking a pup in about 16 weeks or so
