Moll. 1,770
I am giving mine, canary seed, egg food, mixed wild bird seed including sunflower hearts, dandelion + flower heads and seed heads. Grass, chickweed in fact any weeds dug up from the garden go straight in with the birds, and the branches with leaves from the sycamore trees, covered in aphids and some sticky stuff, they go potty for it. The hen & cock have raised all 4 eggs, and the chicks are all equal in size, some real bonny ones, all yellow with green caps on the tops of their heads, they are about to fledge any minute now And still have another 2 hens with 4 teeny chicks each. fireman 10,934
Well done Moll and it's a grand sight isn't it to see them take that leap of faith and leave the nest, just make sure they got branches to help them travel back up off the floor of the flight and out of harms way(don't know what your chooks would be like to a fat juicy young fledgling,my old cock chook would have killed them given the chance). Moll. 1,770
One flew out of my hand yesterday Fireman, i put it back in the nest and it flew again, thankfully next time it stayed put I've removed the chooks from the aviary for now, just to be on the safe side
J Darcy 5,871
DD, i fed egg food in small quantities from when the birds started to come into condition. This was increased when chicks were hatched as well as plenty of greens. dandelion is excellent. I used to keep the males in with the hen and chick and never lost a single chick through throwing. Not with canaries anyway. With other british i did! You will just have to seperate the cock a day beforethe eggs hatch.....or, run him as a trio and then things might be better.... good luck...JD
