fieldsman 51
I would,nt go giving her milk it will make her stools loose as cow milk is not good for dogs. When she,s whelped give her as mush good grub as she will eat if you want to supplement her diet with milk get a good animal replacement milk specially formulated for dogs I feed mine on pet mince from the butcher as well as cooked game rabbit hare venison liver and chicken all good grub that can be obtained for a few £ the game is free as you should have caught a bit during the season.I start the pups on fresh minced beef as soon as they will take it sometimes as young as 3 or 4 weeks make sure not to over do it as they will become constipated .Make sure she feels safe in your chosen whelping box as she will probably try to move them mine wont tolerate another dog anywhere nearby they go a bit nutty if she will let you, sit near by every so often just to keep an eye on her,.Nature usually sorts it self put loads of news paper down in sheets she will start ripping it into pieces when she is getting close to giving birth and as it get soiled you can take out the soiled and put in new stuff when she,s finished replace the paper altogether with something soft for her to lay on.I personally prefer to whelp them in a pet crate in the house its easier to keep an eye on things as they often go into labour during the night.I,v only had one bitch give birth during the day and she started labour around midnight. In a crate they feel safe and tend to relax making the whole thing less stressful on every one. .Dont stop taking her out try to keep her fairly fit if you have another dog that is a bit lively take it separately the better her condition the easier the birth in my experience .Every one has there own way of doing thing this is mine all the best however you do it Fieldsman. STUNTMAN 552
Dry warm draft free whelping box kenneled alone. Let her eat the placentas. Worm HER the day after pups are born with Pyrental paramote, pups at two weeks and every 10 days till homed. Dew claws tails depending on the breed at two days.Dryfood/water 24/7 while the shes nursing flesh i ya got it is good to. When weening her off the pups I dont feed Her for at least 48 hours, just water so milk production stops and eclampsea dosnt set in. dob 5/4/11 Edited May 9, 2011 by STUNTMAN Quote Link to post

skycat 6,173
Seriously, if you don't know what a whelping box is you really should go out and buy a book: that way you can read it at home without coming on here and getting slagged off by everyone. It's called homework: what you do to learn about stuff. Not trying to be funny, but you really would be better off reading a decent book: the replies on here have all been good, but it doesn't tell you everything you need to know. Edited to add: if a whelping (the birth) goes well then you won't need to know much at all. The main problem lies in knowing when and if there is a problem: if you don't recognise the signs of a bitch in difficulty you could end up losing bitch as well as pups. Most lurchers do whelp easily, but once in a while there is a problem which only a vet can sort out. Quote Link to post
