if a dog gets blew off or jacks after 3/4 mins everytime it gets on a good hare its not up to the job your doing is it? personally if they get blew off they may aswell jack coz they not good enough, o

is it the dogs fault for jacking through lack of heart and confidence, or is it the owners fault for regularly out classing the dog on hopeless slips in the hope it pulls it off. If a dog keeps being slipped on something he can't catch surely he will lose heart and confidence :hmm:

Sometimes it's due to handler error, sometimes a dog just doesn't have it.

Was once out with some folks doing a bit of a walkup when a hare got up from its seat no more than 8 metres in front of a big racy bitch...which watched it run away. Didn't even show a scrap of interest. The dog showed no interest in foxes alive or dead and would 'sometimes' run at rabbits and whether it would then pull up or carry through was a matter of chance. The fella who had it put some work into it, no joy. He gave it to someone else and they put over half a years effort into it, no joy.

To me this dog just didn't have it. Lack of heart, lack of prey drive, whatever. I think that the majority of dogs, even underconfident routine jackers, would show some sort of reaction if a hare got up that close in front.

That being said there are plenty of jukels that have been ruined by crap handling.

if you had a dog that pulled up aka stashed would you keep it if it was a good dog and what would you call a stash ive seen some good dogs do it odd times [bANNED TEXT] the hare as two much stay for um and starts two pull away or some dogs do it when the ground is concrete hard of very stoney would you get rid i no some men that would get rid in two secs but i think if the dog trys is best and then runs out of steem after 3 or 4 mins and the hare is pullin away if it does the odd time so be it if still kills plenty

seen it happen a couple times way decent dogs naw wanting to lay themselves out when the grounds quite hard but run different

when soft

Mine is 5, and pulled up on me for the first time, the season just gone.

We had done 4 in a month, and then he just pretended he couldnt see one that was clearly in the lamp :icon_redface:

I just laid off them for a while, then ran another with another dog present (though on a slip) and no problems since.

to me, he just had a bad day, but then, don't we all ?

We don't do them half as much as some, so its no real bother too me, never pulled up on anything else in his life.

I have been out with collie x and a saluki x that pick and chose their runs......it drives you insane and to be honest I dont know how the owner puts up with it, I certainly couldnt.

Every animal is entitled to a bad day at the office now and again, but if it keeps happening then it should be dead imho!

A jackers a jacker at the end of the day, He's taking kennel space up valueable kennel space cost the same to feed a jacker as it does a tryer

but what if the dog did not have enough saluki in it two out run a hare and after a hard race and the starts two pull away and after 100 yards stoped

What??? Saluki blood only for long ears??

There are lots of reasons why a dog pulls up (not just on what quarry you mention) if its as fit as it can be and is in tip top shape then it may have another "silent injury" or other thing to stop it.

If a dog jacks consistently then ask why? What happened? How? Over run? Overmatched, too much expected Etc.....they ain't machines an have the odd bad day, just like us.

Dogs dont jam on cause they dont have the wind! they jam on cause they dont have the heart!

had dogs with the wind breeding and abiliyt that threw a one line breaker.

had dogs that couldnt barley catch a hare that would run there guts out and not throw the towel in.

totally agree if a dog fit and injury free and not romped to death and it stashes its no heart, i wudn,t keep it and diffnitly wudn,t breed from it because thers a coldness in the line trust me it,ll come out in some of the pups not all but some, this in my opion is wrong with to many coursing dogs men breeding from cold lines.

No, he wont be gone if he does it again. but, as I said, it doesn't really bother me, he has never done it on quarry I'm more interested in catching

I'm not really one to oshift on, or pts a dog I've owned since a pup due to a couple of bad days.

Even at 5, he has more that earned his place by the fire.

depends how you look at your dog an more importantly how you value your time,

i dont think theres any excuse for a dog pulling up

dogs that blow up on good hares an jack are bullies if they can boss there hare about they run if they cant they jack,

i like a dog 100% commited to its quary on every slip,if im lamping an find 7 no hopers sitting on the hedge with that kind of drive/commitment i will catch 2 or 3 of them,
