fresh earth 47
Seriously anyone breeding a bitch should know these things long before the situation comes along. I never feed any different i have whippets and half a lb of meet and a handfull of red mills racer is all she gets but its good high quality food once pups are a few days old she gets an extra handfull of red mills you should know by looking at her whether she is getting enough. Some dogs are like a child in mcdonalds just because she is eating it dont mean she needs it. I had a 27" 8 stone american bulldog who had 1 pups and she wasnt even getting half what your feeding that bitch. Quote Link to post

socks 32,253
unless you are feeding a dog the size of a horse then 6lb of food is way way way to much ... although tripe is percent moisture the amount on a stomach that is allready distended with pups is no good for a pregnant bitch ... she is being sick because there is no room in her stomach for the pups and all the food you are feeding her ... a pregnant bitch only needs another half of the food she would normally have and that should be fed 3 times a day so the bitch's metabolism has time to process each meal ..... fresh earth 47
Seing as iv bred and kept racing and working dogs all my life i have a bi experience and obviously things change dog to dog i have one bitch that i feed as above about half a cup of red mills racer in the morning and half a lb of mince at nite to me thats more than enough as in racing condition quarter of a lb of mince and a half scoop keeps her at 22lb at 19". I usualy wait till the pups are out then start giving her goats milk etc she also gets fish every 2-3 days and an egg on oposite days but generaly you dont need to go over the top with feeding a bitch in whelp. I never actualy weigh or measure what i feed any of my dogs i judge by eye and as i said you shuld know by looking at your bitch if she is getting enough or not but as said yes better to much than not enough but a fit properly fed dog will be healthyer and have healthyer pups than an over fed unfit dog. Some dogs need alot more than others i do have one bitch who eats almost double to stay at the same weight. What breed is the dog and what hight should be able to give better advice if we know what were talking about bud. Quote Link to post
whippetmike 3
cut her food down abit the way i look at things is in the wild the dog would not be capable of catchin alot of quarry so it always helps them to pass the pups easier i told my vet this years back he stood look at me for a couple of minutes and said he never looked at it like that and ask if i had ever had problem with the births and said my dogs always are in good nick called me very clever lol once she has the pups pile the food in her atb mike Quote Link to post

The problem is that her instincts are telling her to eat as much as possible, and a lot of bitches will try and stash the food for later: like later, as in after having her pups. This is a hangover from the instincts of wild dogs/foxes who try and eat and put by as much food as possible for when they are laid up with their cubs/pups for a couple of weeks after the birth. I actually hardly increase the amount of food for a pregnant bitch, maybe just a little if she really wants to eat a lot as she is nearing the end of her pregnancy. The time to feed her more is after she has had the pups, but don't go mad even then. Once she is feeding pups, especially after the first week, she will need a lot more food, especially if she has a big litter. Monitor her every day then, she shouldn't lose weight, and give chicken carcases/beef rather than tripe which doesn't contain as much goodness; a bit of tripe is fine, but concentrate more on the meat/carcases etc which are highter in protein. She's obviously a really greedy bitch, and you don't want her throwing up all over the pups, or scratting places to hide the food in her whelping bed. I personally wouldn't leave any food down either, especially not dry. Increase the amount she would normally be fed, and as Socks says, feed her 3 times a day. She will be fine. It is possible that her hormones have just sent her over the top in her imagined need for loads more food, in which case you will have to be sensible for her. Quote Link to post
