first thing is jabs for the pup - these should be covered with normal puppy jabs but as has been said check with your vet if unsure.

wear gloves when you are ratting as you will come in contact with all sorts of stuff a rat could have crapped or pissed on. i have some of that alcohol type hand gel handy in the car so i can use that before driving home.

next thing if the dogs live in the house then you want to have a dog bath outside so you can wash the dogs when you get back from ratting thoroughly. rats dont live in the cleanest of places so your dog is going to get up the eyes in livestock muck, chicken crap, rotten waste etc...if theres a slurry pit where you are planning on going you can bet your life the dog will be in to that as well (and you may end up going in to get it out!!!).

once your dog is sorted after getting back, you will have to get yourself cleaned up. also read up on weil's disease on the net for the symptoms so you know what to look out for.

i was at a chicken farm ratting and two dogs had just grabbed a rat. i grabbed the rat to get it off them for the bag but it was still alive and bit my hand through the gloves i was wearing (scan knitted with rubber palms)on the fleshy part base of my thumb. after a week my hand had swollen right up and i had to go to the drop in centre for some anti biotics. but again same farm i had gotten a rat off a dog and was passing to my dad to go in the rat bag when he got stuck in the deep pile of chicken droppings and fell forward his finger ending up in my mouth chicken shit and all - on that occasion i was fine and didnt get struck down with any sort of illness.

i have seen lads do some crazy shit when out ratting and come to no harm but prevention is better than cure - the diseases you can pick up from rats should not be underestimated.

all the best.

also just to add...

i think it is unnecessary to give your dogs anti bio's or jabs everytime you take them ratting. they will build up their own immunity soon enough. just clean any wounds with hydrogen peroxide which you can get from any chemist. dont get the 40% stuff though get one of the weak versions 5% or 6% alternatively some people swear by salty water to clean wounds.
