However i don't understand the obsession with jumping big gates! All my dogs are taught to jump and all jump very well, however i will always let them take the easiest option, i see little point in sending a dog over a 5 bar gate if there is a lower fence or gaps in the gate that it can get through, which inevitably there normally is. I have a 22" dog that would go over a 5 bar gate with ease, as it is he normally belly crawls under the lowest bar. I don't mean to sound like i'm ranting, just i genuinely don't see a big gate as "the main aim" . . . . A bad landing could see your dog seriously injured, always go for the easiest option. I had a bitch pre ban she was coursing a hare, the hare went under a gate and the bitch followed the gate had a fairly big gap that she would have fitted under but speed she was going resulted in 8" by 6" bruising and a nasty 5" rip in the skin on chest I think she was lucky could have been worse. This bitch was very capable jumper she could jump 5 foot hedges easily from standstill! I also let this dog take easy option when out and about!! crawling under gates.. Quote Link to post
ol26 2
ive had a few heart stopping moments, my bitch jumps or takes the easy option if ther is one, however a couple of times shes almost balanced on the top rung of a gate or fance and sprung off - anyone else had this - i saw a lamb one jump a gate and get it leg caught in the top two bars and just snap it.. this would be bad news! any tips for encouraging them to clear it rather than sping off the top rung? looking forward to seeing Ace jump though dan - sould make those lamping nights a bit easier on your old back! Lab 10,979
Christ surely any lurcher at 22" that's been taught to jump properly then a 5 bar gate should be no problem. My lab can clear them too, easy!!! However if I can send him over a fence I will as most fences have a little bit of give and seriously cuts down the risk of leg break. Quote Link to post
