Dan Outdoors 13
Just curious what others have acchieved with their dogs, expect that a 5 bar gate is the main aim.. Will my 22 make a 5 bar? Quote Link to post
Chid 6,537
no it would struggle jumping over a breeze block Quote Link to post
Hannah4181 260
There is no reason why a 22" dog can't jump a 5 bar gate................ However i don't understand the obsession with jumping big gates! All my dogs are taught to jump and all jump very well, however i will always let them take the easiest option, i see little point in sending a dog over a 5 bar gate if there is a lower fence or gaps in the gate that it can get through, which inevitably there normally is. I have a 22" dog that would go over a 5 bar gate with ease, as it is he normally belly crawls under the lowest bar. I don't mean to sound like i'm ranting, just i genuinely don't see a big gate as "the main aim" . . . . A bad landing could see your dog seriously injured, always go for the easiest option. 2 Quote Link to post

swamper 11
the reason why some ppl are obsessed with there dog jumping the big gates is that you dont want your dog to hesitate when in pursuit......if the dog comes to a big gate then i want it to go straight over as it may be the quickest way......the last thing i want is it to look for a lower option that will put it further behind .....i start them young.. as for lifting them over............ morton 5,368
The ground i hunt,a dog as to jump as second nature,at speed, otherwise it will quickly lag behind in the chase. It does'nt matter the size of the dog,if it cannot cover obstacles it's strike rate will fall. When dogs start to look for shortcuts and gaps, because they lack confidence in jumping, thats when it's likely to pick up more injuries.
