skycat 6,173
Sounds like yours are coming on great Skycat... Do you think perhaps you are more used to Saluki types, and so are more used to their traits and thus you are more inclined to train in accordingly without even thinking about it....?? My pup is doing ok... she will retrieve close to me but doesn`t really want to give up her prize to me, Sit is good, stay she`ll do for a short while and she will walk to heel of lead IF i keep a close eye on her.... She loves to use her nose learning from my dog Good scents to follow, Just the other week the two of them dived into a large hedge after a bit of crashing about a fox bolted closely followed by my pup, another fox bolted from the other side of the hedge which my Old bull cross gave chase too the young dog still crashing around in the hedge.... Saw my pup loose her fox as it dived through a hedge on the other side of the field a few hundred yards away, which i`me quite thank full for really as i don't think she`s ready to tackle one on her own yet.... Her most annoying trait is her dependence on me and the other dogs... I cant leave her outside at night in her kennel as around ten mins before my alarm clock goes of to wake me up for work.. she starts whineing { wakeing the neighbours} so now i have her in the house at night and she licks my face instead...and if i`me in the house during the day and she`s int kennel it`s the same again whineing And as much as i`ve tried with socialising she is nervous when on her own... But her confidence in the field, and hunting instict is overcoming her faults " for now" gonna start her ferreting this coming season and see where we go from their... In looks and build she is the double of your Lena.... Mars... Schuck was very nervous around strangers for a while, (strange considering her parents are super confident and always have been, even Reem (sire) which isn't necessarily typical for a Saluki type, but I got over that by taking her on her own, just me and her, down the local rec. and forcing her to meet nice calm dogs and sensible people. (Yes, there are a few thank God!)She'll never be a people dog, but she's now not scared to come and say hello. Lena is the opposite: loves everyone and goes up to dogs to say hello and acts proper daft and wants to play. I make sure mine sleep outside, and if they're together they are quiet. But I also make sure that they are left after a walk alone in the kennel: I generally walk them separately. If one kicks off it gets a bowl of water in its face! I'll also go into a kennel if a dog is whining and give it a right bollocking: not hit it or anything, just stand over it threateningly, really snarl at it and tell it off in a nasty voice, and MEAN IT. People say that I'm scary, maybe its true: I don't have noisy dogs in the kennel. Of course there's bound to be a difference in mine as they were born here, they interact with their parents all the time, and I do think that makes for a much more confident animal in general. I might have had problems like you're having if I'd taken Schuck from this environment, though she's changed a lot since she was in season. In some ways I'm very hard on a dog, but I also give them loads of fuss, just so long as they toe the line and do as they are told, but I don't ask too much of a pup with Saluki in it: their brains don't seem to develop in quite the same way as other breeds. Like Lena, she was always playing down the garden, throwing sticks or things around, not bothered if I didn't speak to her all day, whereas Schuck was following me round like a little shadow. If a dog annoys me, acts stupid, jumps up at me, I'll just ignore it for a few hours, and I seldom fuss a dog if it comes to me for attention, only if I call it to me. Schuck is very submissive to me, not in a cowed way, but because she wants to do the right thing. Lena just seems to absorb what I want and usually does it, but she's not got that intensity of bond as Schuck has. She (Lena) jumped up at me the other day when we were playing fetch the ball from the lake, and she caught my face, I lashed out at her with my foot and got her in the chest. She never made a sound, just sat down and stopped pratting about. I didn't really hurt her but it must have given her a shock as I've never laid hand or foot on her before, she just hasn't needed it, but she didn't jump up again, well, she did, but she made sure that she was bouncing on the spot about two yards away  She learns very fast but doesn't get so easily upset as Schuck, who just hates to get it wrong. I am finding them very easy to read and get on with, but I don't try too hard. What I mean is that I don't focus my attention on them all the time. I just let them get on with their lives most of the time, but always follow certain rules when we're out, or at home. It's hard to explain: in the past I have, like a lot of people, made a big fuss of their dogs, always wanting some interaction, playing with them a lot, often calling pups to me. I think a pup can get overwhelmed with all that attention, and with some it can make them feel confused as though you are deferring to them in some way. Since I started being more offhand with pups and giving them space to grow up and do their own thing, (obviously not all the time in the field. They have to come when they are called and walk nicely on the lead and sit for the lead to be taken off etc etc) I've found that training is a lot easier, and if you are not available all the time the pup really values the time it does spend with you. Mars: that doesn't really help you at all does it! Maybe you have just bonded too well with your pup. Does she whine if she's in the kennel with another dog? If so, then I don't know what to suggest, assuming you've tried the water treatment. I must admit her dad was a whinger as a pup, but he was able to run free at home, in the house and garden. When he was about a year old I could start to leave him in a kennel if I needed to: Saluki things are a bit weird like that. You have to work round their peculiarities. Quote Link to post

I too am firm with my dogs, and give praise when it`s warranted... i`me trying summat new at the moment, started this week...she is staying with my other half at her house and at mine when my other half is here.. so forcing her to deal with situations without me, but with a familiar face around too I suppose i`me more used to the busy independant nature of terrier types, and i`me haveing to adapt to the more needy/soft side of the sighthound as she seems to be... skycat 6,173
She looks so different to mine doesn't she. Your's looks almost as though she could be a Bull cross LOL, whereas mine show much more of the Saluki influence. I love the head of yours. Smart Dog: can't remember the breeding of the sire, but I know he's got Holmes's stuff in him, and I think the dam came originally from Caulfield. Don't quote me on that though. I'm not into that side of things like I used to be so I haven't bothered to write down his lines. Quote Link to post
