DeanD 3
Some start later than others, jmo... its not a good sign... it depends of course. I've had pups I had to hold back at 5 months as they wanted to enter. again... jmo... like everyone else... we've all got an arsehole. Quote Link to post
Guest Eamon.Mc
Have a bit of patience, dogs mature at different ages, some will go to ground early some won't, some self enter and some don't. What you need is for your dog to see regular earth work, and keep it staked out until it's doing backflips to get down the hole itself. JMO. Quote Link to post

jpnixon 7
In my opinion the dog is too young yet wait til the start of next season and show the dog a dead end then on the next dig let the dog see he fox going back to ground and let him in right behind it and thats one way of starting some people start with using an older dog and the younger dog but its better to start a dog on its own Quote Link to post
TonyT 1,435
isnt that the 17inch dog you were talking about last week? Quote Link to post
Mars 42
in the past when i used to own terriers, right from being young pups i would make sure they were mad for chasing a ball, i would find an unocupied earth and let the pup chase the ball down the earth, i.m.o this teaches the pup that going to ground is fun, then as they got older they would be listening to older terriers at work, then allowed to rag the end product, till eventualy seeing the stuff themselves by this time going to ground was part of going for a walk. Like others have said though dogs start at different ages. Good luck yis Mars. Quote Link to post
Guest ROXY
Is the quarry in the earth your trying to enter it, if theres no quarry and no scent then dont try to force it otherwise when it is old enough to dig to it might be false marking and you wont no if your coming or going with it. dog fox 16
Is the quarry in the earth your trying to enter it, if theres no quarry and no scent then dont try to force it otherwise when it is old enough to dig to it might be false marking and you wont no if your coming or going with it. couldnt agree more ,if someone,s home you,ll not keep him out or he be intrested at the least .still abit young yet (patiance).my 14 month bitch would not even look at a hole 2 month ago ,while the other same age ive had no problem ,the first bitch i spoke of was tryed last week and went straight to ground ,after about five mins bolted a dog fox ,most times the dogs right (not always lol)but if someones home he,ll go when he ,s ready IMO Quote Link to post
porkypowell 2
A couple of questions. Have you had the dog from a pup ? Have you entered it along the lines of rabbit rat and something a bit feisty such as a mink ? Does it go to ground or dig at any of the above holes If you can answer yes to all these questions the dog is almost ready for fox. You need a fresh carcass for him to worry if the dog shows no interest drag it about until she is really keen. Do this for a while until the sight of the cadaver send the dog into a state of excitement? Take the dog to many likely looking earths and let the dog make its mind up don `t encourage the dog to enter or force the animal to enter. Time is the most important factor in producing a quality dog do not enter the dog with another dog it will cause big probs unless you are under very experienced hands. Think about the dogs first time it will go something like this. The dog very excited by the musky aroma of the garden cadaver starts to look down a hole and her nostrils start to flair as she breathes in the scent drawing her deeper and deeper into the darkness until its face to face, she goes to grab it to have a play but this one bites back. Now this is the important part does she bolt from this set of sharp teeth or does she give it a bit back. Well, she gives it a bit back and the fox decides its time to bail out and the dog pursues this animal out of the set. Very excited so take good care of your little apprentice at this stage Its your part to make sure this fox is able to bolt by being very careful around the den as a dig would be disastrous at this early stage a nice clean bolt is what is needed. The dog then comes out straight after its moving play thing very gutted but keen to have another go. Give her time to reflect and a bit of time with the garden cadaver and try again remember always on the dogs terms. Be very careful this time of the year you don`t want to come across a vixen with cubs she will give your dog a pasting. Spend the summer playing with the cadaver and look to have a go early winter this year. Don`t give up I have entered dogs to early and waited up to 2 years to enter them to fox, every dog is different in different hands. Best of luck with your problem hope I have helped Simon Edited February 13, 2007 by porkypowell Quote Link to post
