Do I deal with snakes ?.

Recommended Posts

"Do you deal with snakes?". Was the question . Thinking it was another of those situations where a grass- snake had been spotted filching goldfish from a garden pond, or an adder had been tentatively identified by the lady five doors away as it dissappeared into her rockery, I readied my excuses and mentally rehearsed my speach along the lines of ,"How lucky / excellent habitats in your gardens ".

No, this sounded like a proper job. Snakey was in sitting room of an upstairs flat . Customer had lost sight of it but had stuffed towels under the doors to confine it to one room .

I was once lured into a similar situation by a customer who'ed spotted a snake behind an old mattress in his garage . I peered at the thing in the gloom . It was'nt a native . Possibly a baby python or boa. Not big and not poisonous was my diagnosis based upon no real knowledge of exotic reptiles I confess . I moved in and announced that judging by its dull and dusty appearance coupled with the fact that is was completely still it appeared to be long-dead . I poked the cobwebs aside and peered a little closer . Then I burst out laughing at my own dippyness . Some of them Beany Babies can look quite real in poor light ! :icon_redface:

This little reptile turned out to be real enough. It was tucked inside a wooden box used to hold CDs It was not a snake though .

The most likely explanation for its miraculous appearance centred around the fact that the owner of the flat had recently bought some plants in tubs to stand on her balcony.

After a few pictures and a stern warning not to fall asleep in plant pots I released it in an area where I have seen a few others of its kind .

thats some slow worm that mate, my mother got some monsters in her garden in south wales, but thats a cracker

They used to be really common here -especially in my Nan's garden which backed onto the railway-but became quite scarce. They seem to be making a come-back though.post-13773-0-53246600-1304458787_thumb.jpg

Plenty of Adders round my way and when I did the garden the other year I must have picked up 20 Slow Worms......found one again the other afternoon, my boy loved it and wanted to keep it.

Being the law abiding citizen that I am, I told him that it was illegal to do so (which put a sort of baffled look on his 3 year old face)

Fairly common all things "snakey" near me.

Got the same call today..."We have a snake in our hay barn.......it keeps hissing at us when we move the bales" Right .........ok......well not a snake was my immediate thoughts. On arriving at the said barn........its a huge stable complex and one of my long-term contracts for rodent control, i was greeted by a terrified groom and an equally terrified odd job man. Pointing me in the general direction....i proceeded to move a few bales..........when i heard the noise they were referring too, i recognised it instantly as i have dealt with lots in the past.......Bumble Bees nest beneath the pallets the bales were sitting on. To cut a very long story short..........i had to remove the nest into a sealed bucket with as many of the bees as i could............for re-location at another site as they had to clear the area of bales completely.

We get plenty of grass snakes here and a few adders...........but have never been lucky enough to see a slow worm, i like to get the odd picture now and then of the grass snakes as they warm themselves on an old stone wall in the early morning sun at the golf club after checking my trap line and cages.

My gundog cornered a grass snake in her run one year, it was bloody massive, run next to the horse manure dump, very much liked by grass snakes for egg laying. Released it up the back field, nice to see.

Had a slow worm on the dorset coast a year or so back at my father in laws place. It was a first for me and a real treat.

Seen lots of snakes real close up in the far east when I was living there they were absolutely beautiful. Saw some spiders too now those are they things I do not like but scorpions etc never bothered me.

Back when we were kids, off up the shop after fishing the night and we found a bloody great grass snake on the gravel path with a frog half in/half out of its mouth...my mate got a picture of it on the camera.

Lost now I suppose and of course pre digital days, it was a cracking pic.
