boyo 1,398
i was wondering how many out there run the big ears with lurchers with no saluki blood at all and how do they measure up . a while back i ran a first cross to first cross deerhound x greyhound and she would catch for fun on feild or fen and giving the hare plenty of start. mind you i have seen loads of u /s ones as well but that goes for any cross inc salukis .my 3 now are saluki crosses but would love to find another deerhound cross that could do it with the style of my old bitch. skycat 6,173
I remember her well J. Lovely bitch: didn't you breed a litter from her? My own experiences of non Saluki blooded hare dogs are pretty small. My best was probably Seeker, a 3/4 Grey 1/4 Beardie. She caught a few, was very fast with good stamina, but she didn't have the gears a good Saluki type does. Quote Link to post
juckler123 707
Got right into coursing in the seventies the travellers had pure greys doing two from three on big land dogdyke boston etc the deerhound types and collie deerhound types were the favourite then along came the sals made the job easier with the stamina. You have to put the work in more if they havent got the saluki blood but they do learn to run slower and conserve energy with experience i still run a fast type now typical of the old stamp traveller stuff tight runner that can stay on a bit. speedie 329
iv seen a lot of none saluki lurchers run hares and do well not saying they could do 5 or 6 mins but seen alot that could do 3 mins and few that could do 4 or slightly more. they also seem to recover a lot quicker than the saluki types maybe because of not having that 6 mins in them but could do a lot of work in the day and in ireland were better to stay on the hare around cover and fences as anyone over will tell yea we have no shortage of a lot of these dogs are still in alot of the dogs that are around today but most if not all would have saluki blood in them now Quote Link to post
Blue one 89
Is the saluki coursing lurcher, easier to get fit then, say a none saluki blooded coursing lurcher? Quote Link to post
snoopdog 1,256
Is the saluki coursing lurcher, easier to get fit then, say a none saluki blooded coursing lurcher? fitness is so important if your running long ears regular ..but i find my lurcher with only a little bit of saluki in it is far easier to get fit then my other dog who has a very high percentage of saluki in it ..just my opinion with having both ..maybe its just my dogs but i dont think so... Thirty five years ago I ran The Plain with Max , a beddie collie x grey he caught quite a few hares, and won me a few bob ,but he would be like dead the day after, very tough dog ,very hard attitude ,big heart, but when I got my first saluki cross, Sonny, though he was only 1/4 saluki the difference in his recovery rate was marked. PS Hope you and dogs are well J. Edited May 3, 2011 by inan Quote Link to post

Once i reckon , and then hed be rolling around in a pool of throth , blowing out of his arse !! He certainly is not going to have the recovery rate of a saluki bred dog, neither is he going to be as good around cover . Its not just about staminer , its about style , controlled pace , and coursing sence , which the saluki has loads of naturally . You cant beat the right type of coursing dog on big or small land .When was the last time a normal lurcher won a match !!?? Quote Link to post
