Sky sources said it is understood the men were British Asians and were taking photographs of the plant.

They were detained at about 4.30pm after a stop check on a vehicle by officers and part of a road was closed.

The five, all in their 20s and from London, were held overnight at a police station in Carlisle under section 41 of the Terrorism act.

The investigation is being led by counter-terrorism officers in Manchester.

Sky's home affairs correspondent Mark White said: "From what I understand there was nothing found on them that would give immediate cause for concern that there was any potential attack."

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said the investigation is in its early stages and no further information will be released yet.

The location and timing of yesterday's incident - which came hours after news broke that Osama bin Laden had been killed by US special forces - is likely to cause concern.

Police said there was no evidence of a connection to the events in Pakistan, but the Government has urged the public to remain vigilent.

Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 allows a police officer to arrest any person who is "reasonably suspected" of being a terrorist.

The Sellafield site - responsible for decommissioning and reprocessing nuclear waste, and fuel manufacturing - is heavily protected by private security and officers from the Civil Nuclear Constabulary, some of whom are armed.

sellafield is the largest plutonium storage site in the world !!!!

they where hardly sight seeing

If they don't want to be part of this country of ours (however shit we might moan Britain is) then they ought to f**k off elsewhere. They'd find it hard to get away with their nonsense elsewhere though. Our trust and goodwil has been abused here in the UK, by a minority of our welcomed friends.

I believe Sellafield has a tourist section as I remember the adverts from TV but I would imagine if they had tickets they wouldn't have been arrested.

The BBC say the men were Bangladeshi so the follow are possible (not in any particular order)

They were trying to steal industrial secrets

They are nerds if people can get a hardon over watching trains then why not nuclear facilities

They are environmentalists

But the most likely is terrorist related.

The reason we have never had a nuclear based terrorist attack is not because the materials are hard to get. When the USSR collapsed lots and lots of nuclear material was sold off by officers in the military there illegally. Also nuclear bunkers and arms were just abandoned throughout the USSR. Roger Cook even went to Germany on one his programs and bought enough materials for £250k to take out London.

My opinion is they probably were terrorists but not very clever or connected ones or they would know easier sources to procure it from.
