waidmann 105
hi folks , just a quick question , will harris hawks kill as many rabbits as you show them in an outing or do they get bored after a few, thanks lk i'm no expert bud but its not about killing large numbers of rabbits per outing, more the quality of the flight. harris's (in my limited experiance) will take multiple rabbits, depending on weight, fitness, experiance and above all the quality of the exchange (swapping the dead rabbit for food out of the bag, without the bird feling robbed of his efforts/prize). i would reccomend a falconry book by holinshead " days harris hawking" (i think thats the title lol) where he basicly tells wee hawking stories, quite incitfull i found. waidmanns/falconersheil! ferret_boy 0
as waidmann said its all about the trade off and the ammout of food the bird gets after each kill. if you try to get a young bird to make to many kill with little or no reward after each time it can lead to the bird felling robbed and not putting the effort into the chase and as said before is more about the flight than it is about big bags hope this helps Quote Link to post
gwill09 2
hi mate i doubt theyll kill every rabbit they see, but theyll fly at most in my experience, but weight is the main thing to get right, as if the birds not hungry why would it kill?? just my opinion also agree with what the other two lads have wrote, if the trade off isnt seen as worthwhile the bird will feel robbed and may not put as much effort in to the next bunny Quote Link to post
romany52 313
You need to first get the bird motivated with, 10 to even 20 single kill outings, with a good kill feed. You are then, with a fit bird, only limited by how long it takes the bird to feel to full to hunt. I personally usually stop at 4, allowing me to still give good rewards. Mike. 1 Quote Link to post
j j m 6,539
a good mornings hunting for me is 3 in the bag,if you dont reward the bird after a catch it will loss interest and feel robbed, best keep it to a safe number Quote Link to post
