Jamie m 668
Although a rabbit that's been chased to ground by a dog will be reluctant to bolt a second time Quote Link to post
max abell 196
As above we have taken our 18 month jack russell with us ferreting since he was a pup he now marks holes very well for his age but as he is no lurcher he isn't a lot of good at catching escapes but then a lurcher cant get under thick bramble like he can each dog to there own i say but he is great company and has the potential to grow into a good marking dog Quote Link to post
banjorabbiter 2
Agree jamie m but personally I'd rather have a dig and add one More to the bag mate, unless it's a 12 footer haha Atb banjo. Quote Link to post
NEWKID 27,530
My jack russel is a decent ferreting dog , marks, catches hole hoppers ( great when using long nets on hedges seems to be on them if they run the top of the hedge, real quick through cover), good anticipation of whats going on below ground( can't beat the ears cocked staring at hole stance) she's constantly working real busy dog. she was easy to break to ferrets and stock. Downsides..... hard mouthed ( the ferrets get the ones she 's caught), not quick enough out of cover ( although she normally puts enough pressure on them to put them back in pretty quick), a bit noisy as a marker snuffling at the hole and will sometimes dig at it, For me I wouldn't want to go without her she lets me know whats going on below ground and makes the day more complete. KittleRox 2,147
First things first, make sure the dog is broken to the ferrets or you may end up with a dead ferret Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
A lot of our rabbits are put to ground by the dogs. On one permission it is pretty much every rabbit we catch (odd land that), and sometimes they fight it out a bit longer, but most of of the time they get the boot and come out. Don't get many digs. I know what has been said IS true, but it's not like a definate. Quote Link to post
NEWKID 27,530
She looks like a nice little jack mate Thanks mate I'm pleased with her. I totaly agree with kittlerox breaking them to ferrets is the first thing you need to do, once thats done you can end up with a useful little companion for a days ferreting Quote Link to post
