Canary breeding question

Recommended Posts

I got a pair of canaries last week and the hen has laid her fourth egg today, I know they will lay a few and then start sitting them but the question is the hen has been sitting on the nest as it goes dark (probably all night) and for hours in the morning until she's laid her egg and then coming off them for a good while? Will the eggs have started germinating in the period she's been sat on them or will it just be when she starts to sit really tight?

Cheers, Gnipper

if you dont remove eggs as laid and put dummy eggs in ,then re set all eggs on fourth day chances are some will hatch befor others, they do start to turn inside, but messing with eggs aint always easy when not breeding in cages,

Gnipper, i never messed about with the eggs on my canaries. The hen will know what to do, after all, its her only purpose in life... :notworthy:

I'm pretty much of the same opinion mate and I wasn't going to take any out its just the time she was sat on them for between eggs I was worried about. She's sat tight now so there's either 4 or 5 under her, time will tell if they hatch or not. I've not seen the cock tread her either so fingers crossed.

you won't do unless you woke them up! The cock birds always seem to have Morning Glory...randy buggers!

Your probably right mate, last time I bred them they were in the house and the cock bird was knocking boots with her constantly while we were in the room and I had chicks on boxing day. That cock bird I used to have is in my mates aviary now and was singing his head off when it was -10 with 8" of snow stuck all round the wire

Hopefully i'll have 4 or 5 chicks in a couple of weeks anyway

There was 2 this morning and now there's 3, fingers crossed the fourth one hatches too. I might have a hen goldie coming on monday too

Did you get a hen Goldy for that Cock in the second photo? he looks like a big yellow bird and though the photo does not show him that well he looks to have a good square blaze too

I got him an older hen which he feeds but he just doesn't show any interest in shagging anything. He obviously misses the hen if I split them but there's no signs of treading, nesting etc. He's in with a hen canary thats built a nest now and he still shows no interest in her???
