JohnGalway 1,043 Posted May 4, 2011 Report Share Posted May 4, 2011 I fail to see how anyone can think it's fun or clever or anything to set fire to moorland. At least down in Cornwall its usually gorse on rocky ground and gorse likes fire as it causes the new shoots to sprout (or something I'm not a botanist) but up your way its all heather and peat etc. I think I saw on telly once a program about how fires can keep going for months hidden underground the peat before rearing up again and spreading. I hope they stop the fires soon and no one gets hurt! Over here there's a lot of peat cut and dried for the home, open fireplaces, ranges etc. So yeah, if the peat is dry enough it'll burn right down to the rock in the right places. Saw it happen here before a little hill, burned in the ground for weeks. A few months later then when all the ash had blown away, just bare rock left. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
