JohnGalway 1,043
Same shit going on over here. Forestry block not far from me set alight. Second time it's been tried this year as I saw a bank of withered purple moor grass going to the forestry, next time I passed it had been blackened but the forest hadn't caught on that time. Last year was a nightmare, arsonists burnt thousands of acres of bogland. Some woman and her mother/mother in law actually saw two lads in a car doing it but incredibly thought nothing of it and took no reg number! Am going to start carrying a spade or shovel in the car again, did so last year and managed to put out one fire before it got a proper grip. Could be useful too if I meet the lads starting them. Not sure the comment is fair on the fire fighters though, their first job would be to protect life, then property as in housing etc. Be fairly bad for them if they got caught out fighting a moorland fire then someone got done in by a house fire if they couldn't get there in time, but I do understand where you're coming from. Our army have been drafted in to help some of the fires here in Mayo and Donegal I believe, helicopters with "Bambi" buckets and direction operations from the air. DIDO.1 22,643
I didnt mean to slag off firefighters in general they are heroes but they had 17 engines at the moor. Iv worked on one of the moors that are burning and its just frustrating when 20 firemen just stand and watch as fire sweeps through your best heather. Their policy is let it burn out if its no risk to property but they dont seen to care if someones livlihood goes up in smoke.
byron 1,169
I could see smoke from the Woodhead valley, Londendale earlier from home. Just in time to ruin the nesting season for all the ground nesting birds. Terrible news. totally agree cragman...

We put out a bog fire, myself and another man and a couple of his sons. Two engines were watching from the road for over two hours before they ventured in, "we were keeping an eye on it", "no bother" I said, "we were putting it out" lol. scalesntails 118
I fail to see how anyone can think it's fun or clever or anything to set fire to moorland. At least down in Cornwall its usually gorse on rocky ground and gorse likes fire as it causes the new shoots to sprout (or something I'm not a botanist) but up your way its all heather and peat etc. I think I saw on telly once a program about how fires can keep going for months hidden underground the peat before rearing up again and spreading. I hope they stop the fires soon and no one gets hurt!
