hi there i am new to shooting and my name is ian from cornwall, i picked up a spring air gun yesterday witch i am borrowing and can buy for 80ono if i like it and am after a bit off advice, its a hw99s .22 is this gonna be powerful enough to take a bunny out from 30yrds ish ? i had a play yesterday eve with it but im not to sure if its gonna be enough compared to my mates who i went with (hw35 i think), would a stronger spring or selling it and a buying a new gun a better option, out of intrest what would be its resale value ? the barrel seems fine but on the outside it could do with a bit off a tidy up, possibly a sand down and repaint or polish on the metal work, it also has a 4x32 hawke. any help would be great.

i have also been offered a smk 19-18 with cheap smk scope but am reading online that smk are cheapo rifles? are these worth bothering and what kinda price the worth, cheers

would it be worth taking the gun to local gunsmiths for a clean up/service would u think? if so what sort price would one charge to do so, thanks for the replys so far :-)

Snap his hand off for it. They're well built and should last years of good shooting. They're fairly easy to service, but if you're not confident/competent then a trip to a local gunsmith is a good plan. There are a few people on here that tune springers, might be worth tracking one of them down. It can often be better, and more cost effective, to stand the postage and send your gun away to someone who really knows air guns rather than have your local gunsmith work on it if he's not used to working with them.

Have the HW chronographed, you may be suprised at its output

 

The SMK 19 is a copy of the HW35 and I love mine although I rarely shoot it these days. Its taken out way too many bunnies to count

But if I had the chance of the HW at that price, I'd have taken his hand off at the wrist

I can only reaffirm what has been said already. The HW99S is a cracking good little rifle, as are all Weihrauch air rifles. For eighty quid it's a bargain you'll be very hard pushed to better.

 

Get the rifle chronographed. If it is producing around 11.5 Foot pounds of energy at the muzzle, you'll have all the power you need to humanely despatch a rabbit at 60 metres if you have the talent. At 35 metres you'll have no problems whatsoever.

 

As long as the barrel latches up nice, tight and secure and it's generally in a cleanly functioning state internally, this rifle will serve you very well for all the hunting you are likely to undertake.

 

I would look into having the rifle restored and reblued at some point. A clean and accurate rifle makes a confident shooter in my book

 

RWS Superdomes and H&N Field & Target trophy are two pellets you have to try with it.

 

Edited to add: I've had all my Weihrauch air rifles tuned and serviced by AndyFR1968 here, who is a close mate and shooting buddy. He's done a particularly marvellous job with my Weihrauch HW77 .22, making it so much smoother to cock, lock and shoot. And that has improved it's already incredible long range accuracy. He's great for any advice you'd need on the technical stuff. A great tuner to take it to would be Tony Wall at Sandwell Field Sports. For £70 he'll make it shoot like a dream.

No Steve, Hatsans are only good for Hatstands , Welcome to the Forum Mate, Buy Das Deutsch!!!!!! Some of the best Spring guns I've got one a HW 97 KT a superb bit of kit.

I would have recommended a Hatsan, if he had not had the opportunity on that HW... The HW is the better buy at the price he was offered the HW at! Opportunities like that should be seized with both hands whilst your feet move quickly in the direction of away before the seller comes to his senses! Would not recommend an SMK though some people love them too, I have no experience with those guns, only Westlakes (the wonderful B2, cheap as chips and about as durable, but for the money we paid a damned good laugh)!

 

The person we sold my Hatsan to (not Hogdog, he got Mrs Moles and is practising with the beast) has been regularly shooting rabbits at 30 plus yards with it and thinks it is a great gun as well. Those Hatsans are not all bad you know! Mind you, just found our rat killer we got for use on the glue traps, it got moved into the shed, a Westlake S2, lain up for mnonths, rust on the barrel, varnish flaking off, trigger rusted, sat with a pan scourer, got all the rust off, wiped over the barrel and trigger with gun oil, lubed it, went outside and the damned thing still fires! Makes about the same power it did before we lost it! Useful for stuck rats!
