jimster68 123
i have a pup 8 1/2 months old ,from being very young he has been tought to retrieve and he took to it like a duck to water at one stage if he picked something up he would bring it straight me no matter what it was .he moved on quickly and by 5 1/2 months old he would retrieve a dead rabbit no problem .anyhow at about 7 months old he was taken on a rabbiting trip more of a schooling trip than anything else (not because i wanted him to catch rabbits ).so he quickly learnt to jump long nets took great intrest in rabbits jumping from hole to hole and didnt bother ferrets ,he then managed to catch a young kit ,i knelt down and gently called him ,he walked towards me and backed off and then started running about with the rabbit he kept letting it go and cought it again then started throwing it in the air and rolling on it eventually swallowing it whole back legs first .i was annoyed at the time but didnt let the pup know and when i got home i kicked his toy down the garden in disgust and he brought it straight back.anyhow ive been working on his retrieve at home and he has become a bit hit and miss some days better than others .so tonight i took him out for a walk near some woods and he herd something in the bushes ,so in he goes and comes out with a young woodpigeon ,so i calmly call him he walks towards me then turns and runs off about fifty yards and comes back when hes eaten the pigeon ,im afraid when he came back i had a bit of a rant (not the best thing to do )but this time i couldnt hide my dissapointment .when i got home i chucked his toy down the garden and the c*nt brough it straight back .im in bad need of some good advise and insperation this is my first pup and he aint a bad little dog im willing to put plenty of effort but today im really FECKED OFF.....cheers jim

The first thing i'd do is get a rabbit skin/pheasent wings and tie it/them to a dummy and work with that until your dog is retrieving 100%.Once your happy with that move onto cold game (i've forgot to say keep it all in the garden so not to add to much pressure).Once your 100% with cold game in the garden take it out somewhere new and try it. jimster68 123
thanks for your reply CASSO ,hopefully your right the only time his retrieve goes to pot is when its something he really values (when its alive and kicking )but i dont want this to become a habbit ,for the time being im going to try getting him to retrieve lots of different things ,maybe because its something different he values it more ?im also going to try and get hold of a couple of dead rabbits and get him retrieving them again .if anybody else has any good ideas they would be very welcome .if this fails can anybody recomend a good dogman who could point me in the right direction ......cheers jim
