Guest reload
Point being?? One of my favourite lurchers, infact the dog that got my intrest in lurchers at a young age was a deerhound X greyhound X collie 'Ol Clipped ear on the left' As for a lack in working deerhounds? well yes but thats a fairly good thing, and they are no more rare than working beddies or some collie types. Its just that many deerhound breeders wont be up for breeding lurchers in the main. They have good stock and want to keep it to themselves or the club in the interest of the breed, which to a certain extent is good news as they are keeping a working strain there for the future. Maybe the the last nail in the coffin of Deerhounds and the Deerhound club is the hunting bill, many of these dedicated folk are not going to break the law with such determination as lurcher folk, and many more will be bred not for show and coursing but purely show. 'A well know stalwart of the breed' 'An old snap from 1800's' Could be a good discussion this thread....as many threads on deerhound have been before..... IMO i would never choose a pure bred or first X for my land, but a little bit does bring a certain quality to a lurcher. Quote Link to post
IanB 0
Quality pics reload, I must agree a dash of deerhound in a lurcher normally adds that special something... Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
one of the best lurchers (for catching all quarry) was a deer/grey X whip/grey....she was a very handy tool....26" at the shoulder...... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> <{POST_SNAPBACK}> my mistake....it should have read "that i have seen" ...apologies for any misunderstandings guys.. Kye 77
The coat is a lot thicker, but that last picture of Reloads, that dog has a canny resemblance to my Staghounds!...The coat on my dog COULD be thicker, but 115F isnt the kind of weather to incourage a dog to try and grow a thick coat!..lol. The one quailty i realy like about Deerhounds, is IF you get one that bred right (a Cross or a Pure) they are VERY game, yet they remain very sensible and sane...none of this cartwheeling on the slip, etc...i know some lads like a keen dog to act keen aswell, but i have to admit i like that "Calm-before-the-storm" attitude that some Deerhound hybrids seem to have... I will sort some pictures out of my mutts, and get good Ole' Stabs to put them up for me. Interesting thread..its nice to talk dogs eh? Kye.. Quote Link to post
Guest Doug
i have to admit i like that "Calm-before-the-storm" attitude that some Deerhound hybrids seem to have... Me too. And calm again straight after. So you can go after another 'one' Quote Link to post
Guest baldie
good pic of miss Noble stabs, she put her dogs at public stud for deerhounds and lurchers, and a chap i know once used her, and she put him up for 3 days whilst the bitch was served, a truly marvellous woman by all accounts.Personally, i think the working deerhound will still be used by some of the strange folk in the deerhound clubs, they really dont give a damn, and who is gonna see them in the wilds of scotland?, getting some blood out of them is an entirely different matter though They arent the breed for everyone, not many will wait 18 month to enter them, its bloody killing me, but mine will be just right in the autumn, and he is showing all the signs that the spark is definatly there, he,s very good at the old shoulder charge, and the side on throat grab, as the old terrier keeps finding out Quote Link to post
Guest Doug
It'll be worth the wait, Baldie, when you see that shoulder charge and grab used in earnest - you won't wipe the grin off your face for a week. Quote Link to post

DiStuRBeD 0
Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens. :friends: <{POST_SNAPBACK}> thats some damn good advice mate now i dont have much experience with the breeds, but i have spoken to a few guys that have many years under their belt with staghounds(thats what the long coated roo dogs are called, roo dogs are the short coat variety, but they are used interchangeably.) I do know what you mean about the calmness, but when they are on, they are totally different. i didnt exactly explain everything perfect in my previous post, i was at work, as i am now so was a bit pressed for time. the reason i said possibly saluki blood was as they came from a hot climate i thougth they'd have a degree of heat tolerance... now i dont know if this is correct, but i thought they might... can anyone enlighten me on this? Royston2 0
This is my deerhound lurcher at 10 months who has done me very well so far not having done a season of work yet.....Notice i state her as a deerhound lurcher type even if it is only 1/8 but all the same surely she can be classed as a deerhound cross (maybe this is the problem) i know many people who class there dogs as deerhound type lurchers even if there bred similar to mine with a good bit of saluki in them personally if they work whats the problem if they dont work maybe it could be that individual you get failures in saluki cross`s bull cross`s beddy cross etc list is endless especially in my kennels :11: Personally even if i purchased a deerhound greyhound that was all up and running going well i 100% guarnatee where i am the dog would be classed as 100% useless maybe that is the case for many other`s who know`s.....Dont worry all knowing nothing runs in the family hey Kye :11: :11: Quote Link to post
