Guest baldie
I love them for their beauty, and temperament, to me they are the best cross there is, but i,m biased they are never gonna be the great all rounder, other crosses are, but will do most things. As for whether you need such a big powerfull dog in this day and age? it all depends on what you wanna bust dont it? Quote Link to post
Rainmaker 7
I know I've posted this before, but as it's on topic: My Grey/Deer/Saluki cross at 1yr old and just a smidge under 26". Fast as hell, bags of stamina, very workable, and an excrutiatingly painful saluki/deerhound soft temperament (I drop a feed pan, all the dogs come running, except her, ducking in the corner in case the bang is shouting at her LOLOL). Kye 77
Funnily enough, Bull hybrids are NOT popular over here (a country that has got some nice Bull types to use for breeding as well) although i think they use them for lamping Hogs sometimes in Texas. The Longdog type seems a lot more popular...they do carry Deerhound, some more than others...but they also carry other sighthound types (Borzoi, wolfhound, greyhound etc) Maybe these big ole' Bull cross' just cant hack the hard, gruling, long courses?...I dont think there running style helps them very much, they seem to kick the shit out of the ground when they run as apposed to floating over the top of it!..lol. But what the hell do i know!..lol. Quote Link to post

mistwalker 0
I've had several and had good results with them. I lost a very good young deerhound X dog to a lamping accident this last season. He was about 27" at the shoulder and he put a lot of venision and other stuff in the freezer in his short career. At the moment I have a 3/4 grey 1/4 deerhound bitch pup (the deerhound is from Platt's Odin) I deliberately picked the biggest bitch pup in the litter and at 8 months old she's 27 ½" at the shoulder at the moment and just shy of 70lbs. I guess that she will go another ½" or so and make just about the perfect size for what I want. She has thrown strongly to the deerhound and has a huge thick rough coat and brilliant feet and is showing considerable all round promise with that wonderful ability to find game seemingly from nowhere. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Here's the litter sister to night walkers (sounds like bramble is coming on well, nighty?) She's 26" on the button and keen as feck! Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
one of the best lurchers (for catching all quarry) was a deer/grey X whip/grey....she was a very handy tool....26" at the shoulder...... Quote Link to post
Flynn 314
I dont own a deerhound cross never have BUT it does not mean that i dont like them or see no use for them in the field, tis a silly fool who wears blinkers all the time, the day you stop learning is the day you die and for me i will always be opened minded be it any cross and if i have a quiry i ask, the Folk that *have* or *do* simple.!!!! I dont know how to shoot at all have tried and tried i remain crap, BUT i show a keen interest in those that CARE enuff to talk to me about it and NOT talk down to me like i am a fool. Flynn turning the next page of her book which is always open!!! Quote Link to post
