Hey guys I've never put any replies on here before but this thread has got me wondering something.

WHO IN THE HELL SAID THERE IS ANY AMOUNT OF GOOD Deerhounds over here in Australia. I do a fair bit of work with running dogs and go out coursing with a few different guys with all styles of dogs and I dont care what any of you have heard. There are the odd good deerhounds around but not many fark all actually. As with most breeds cross them with a G/hound to toughen up the feet and coat of the g/h and you have a fair sort of dog but I reckon you get more from the g/h than the d/h by far. Everyone I have seen and this includes first crosses - are WAY too soft, cant turn, not particually fast and seem to be plaged by injuries. They also take too long to start and die too early. I have had d/hound in some dogs but its a small amount that is there and you would never know. I am not commenting on what you guys have over there as the only D/hounds ever imported to Australia was for the showring and as we all know they DO NOT breed for ANY working ability what so ever, most over here distance them selves from the fact that that was why their lovely dogs were bred in the first place. As I said I dont know what you have been told but in my opinion its bullshit.

Hmm; I think Liz McCormick, Lakey and a few others may disagree with you!!

Cheers.

True not too many pure ones about here, most are staghounds (deerxgrey) but the first deerhounds here were for the settlers used for catching tucker and for sport later on. They eventually turned into staghounds and YEARS later imported for the showring. My staghounds father was a deerhound the mother was a stag, The old fella was 13 when he sired the pups, still catching large game, dynamite when ferreting and foxing and was retired at 15 as he couldn't jump the 5ft fences to get back to the truck after a run. He was hunted on average5-6 times a week and just wore out by then. I do agree with you though VERY few working pure deerhounds left in Australia but with the work of a few people we'll have some working lines for future hunters.

Chartpolski - Liz and others can SAY all they want. Pretty easy to cyber hunt. Doubt if her dogs have left her yard in the last 5 years except to go to a dog show (un official that is I dont think she parades them). Definately not hunted despite what you all may of heard. And Lakeys dog is still a pup so its yet to prove itself. Sorry guys proofs in the pudding not in the talking.

hehe, u really dont like the deerhounds do ya mate

you should know tho, that deerhounds have a working history which dates back to when the first settlers came to this country.

now that may of been 200 years ago, and dogs off all types have changed a lot in that time, but we use what we have, and yes the stags might have some wolf or even borzoi, if that is waht is required of the line then so be it

you made me realise something a while ago, who cares if a dog has mixed running blood in it, the most important this is that it works, does what you want etc etc

hence the fact that i eventually went for a stag rather then a pure deerhound

you guys are right d/hounds did come to Oz way back then. But I would love to see a pedigree that can date back to then bred from working stock only with a strong cull rate of duds and bred best to best only. The simple fact is there isnt one dog in Oz that you could do this with. There must be some good ones but out of probably 15 purebreds and countless 1/2bred crosses I cant say I've seen a Champion in any of them. Best of luck guys I hope you r happy with what you have and they serve you to a level your satisfied with.

PS gees Aaron I didnt even say who I was.

I haven't been on here for a while, but it looks like there's still plenty of arguing/conversation going on. :D:D .

Speaking from experience, in that my old man own's a deerhound and had a couple of first x's i find that like most breeds of dog they have there limitations. They seem to have a great nose, plenty of trainability and usually enough speed and stamina. But personally i wouldn't be interested in keeping one, there just not my type of dog.

As for Deerhounds been faster than Saluki's i know what i've seen and i would definitly favour the Saluki. (Personal Opinion).

People always seem to think that the Deerhound x's will be better than Saluki x's on the moors/heather, and i cant comment as i've never run whitey's but a few mates have, with Saluki x's (Fen dogs) and had plenty of success.

All the best. Tommy. ;):good:

Most of the effort put into breeding match dogs in the last 25 years or so has gone into breeding saluki blooded match dogs. Undoubtedly the match boys have bred some superb hare killers but I have seen some very good hare dogs with no saluki blood in them in them at all, but these dogs have often been one offs whereas there are a number of breeders out there with programmes which consistently produce good hare killing dogs.

So why arent there any Deerhound match dogs?

show the video cuse your another deerhound basher

Hi Misti.

You should let me know if you are ever coming down to the South East and I can show you just how much game we have available - we could also probably get your bitch a run!

Have you done much lamping with yours, I always think that there's nothing like a bit of lamping to sharpen them up and teach them to strike well

A) Definitley gotta sort someting out for later in the year - I changed job a few weeks back, so I won't be getting much time off soon, so maybe early next season?

B) She's coming along fine ;) Still managed to avoid most of the local deer, but them pesky 'wabbits' are a whole different ball game (and she doesn't socialise well with foxes either, unfortunately - gotta agree, the lamp sharpens them up like no-one's business.
