wabbit slayer 16
Im thinking of getting some long nets but not sure on size, length or supplier. I was thinking about getting a 100 yard net or would I be better with two 50 yard nets. Or would an other length be better? What size is best 4oz or 6oz? is it like my ferret nets wherby every bit of crap gets stuck in the 4oz? What is the best place to get quality, yet low cost nets from? What else do I need apart from nets, poles and end pins? Any other advice you can offer me? Cheers Quote Link to post
how-to-hunt-rabbit 6
My main bit of advice is buy to match your needs. If you plan on long netting on your own you might find that the 100 yard is better but if your with a friend 2 nets makes perfect sense im sure! As for bits getting stuck, do you plan to use the nets near headge rows? If so you dont put the net close enough to the headge for it to become a problem. I would suggest you take a compass to help you judge the wind. It doesnt have to be a good one, can even get an iphone app. Quote Link to post
Jamie m 668
I didn't know iPhone did a long bet app lol only kiding how will a compase tell you wind direction cheers j Edited April 29, 2011 by Jamie m Quote Link to post
how-to-hunt-rabbit 6
Well you take note of where the rabbits feed (south from holes etc) Then you use the compass to compare so you can better judge where to set nets. If they are south of the holes and the wind is blowing north, you had better get your nets out. Quote Link to post
smithie 2,443
theres a chap sells longnets on here and triercel (spelling) you dont need a compass nor do you need 100yds in 1 net. use google earth and you can see which way you need the wind blowing to net a particular warren. you can also use the ruller at the top to measure the lengh of the drop. after that just watch the weather and wait for the correct wind..personaly i prefer to cary more smaller nets than 1 longer net as if 1 100 yd nets damaged the night could be over but if i had a 50yd and two 25yd nets and 1 got messed up i still have 2 nets to play with buy a copy of Martin Kings Peg to Peg and it will tell you all you need to know to get up and running smithie Quote Link to post
how-to-hunt-rabbit 6
You dont NEED a compass I just find it alot easier too judge wind on fields i dont know with one. The bit about google maps sounds intresting tho.. Just my 2 cents on net length, I like 50 Yd nets because I can fit them nicely in soft fabric (bag for life kinda thing) which is next to silent. Truth is you wont know which length you fancy till you have tried atleast one Quote Link to post
smithie 2,443
i like a 50 when pair netting and 25yds when out on my own, my hands are small and i struggle with the hank when picking up a 50 single handed.. i also have some pillow cases with elastic around the top to place my nets in when in the netting jacket, i havent used them as yet but i will give it ago this winter. im hoping they store better in the jacket as i often carry 4 nets sometimes more.. smithie Quote Link to post

I dont see why thats a problem! I don't see that as a problem, more of a symptem. When someone asks for photos of long netting, then starts telling people how to long net, somehow the sums do not add up. Especially when all they churn out is 'get a compass it works for me.' To be honest with you, I think you have never set a net in your short life. Nothing wrong with that. But, just do not try and bullsh!t your way on a forum where there are people who have been involed in fieldsports in all it's guises for 50 years plus. It just will not work, all you are doing is makeing your self look a fool. TC Edited May 3, 2011 by tiercel Quote Link to post
how-to-hunt-rabbit 6
Im afraid I don’t know what a symptem is. Im sorry i have offended you by doing something differently to the way you do but please don’t attack me and accuse me of lying. I’ll gladly admit that I have only been long netting for about 2 years now; and that the only net I own is my granddads hand-me-down, but this doesn’t affect the advice I give. I would also like to point out that the very website your posting on suggests you use a compass On this page. Quote Link to post

I would also like to point out that the very website your posting on suggests you use a compass On this page. That was not an attack on you, just an observation that, one week you were asking for long netting photos, the next you were telling people how to long net. There are a lot of articles and books written about long netting by people who have never set a net in their lives. Once you have been netting for a number of years you will be able to spot them the same as anyone who has the relevant experience. A lot of what is written is rhetoric and not to be believed. If you want to learn how to set a net properly then as has been stated, buy Martin Kings book Long Netting From Peg To Peg. Martin is an accomplished netter. However, setting a net is just a small part of long netting and in my eyes the least important part. A net set badly will still catch rabbits as long as the field craft is sound. The field craft that is used in long netting cannot in my opinion be learned from a book. You have to get out there and do it, make the mistakes, we have all done them. But most of all learn from your mistakes. And throw that bloody compass in the bin. You get to your chosen field get out your compass and find that the wind is in the wrong direction for the drop you wanted to do. Why? Because you should have checked before you set out. Almost all drops of long nets will be doomed to fail, unless you have done your homework first. The first priority is access if you cannot gain access silently and without winding the rabbits then there is not much chance of catching rabbits. Another consideration is the type of ground you will be setting on, and how the weather of the days before you are netting the ground will affect how the nets will run out. I will leave you to figure that one out for yourself. TC Quote Link to post
