There is a lot off fighting on here about summer hunting. Most off the coursing lads and fox lads would not dare go out this time off the year but there is lots off people on here that hunt rabbits all year round.

What l was wondering what happenings if you have pup like myself at 10 months old do you just walk it and keep it fit until the season which is 5 months away or do you hunt with the pup though the summer so it knows what it is doing before the season starts.

5 months not doing nothing with a pup is a lot off time wasted on the pup and your self so just wondering what people think

theres loads of things you can do through the summer with the pup, so when the season comes you could have her bang on, retrieving-feather and fur, obedience, walks, livestock training inc ferts, lamp a few dummies , marking . hope you have a good season ahead of you

Think there's difference between giving a pup a couple of runs over the summer on some easy rabbits and going out and smashing every easy rabbit you see. My pup had just started to get it together end of last season and she'll get a couple of runs over the summer ( after a bit of rain) she'll also get worked more on all elements of basic training. Years ago it was any month with a R in it you could hunt, we were catching pregnant does ferreting in feb. When should you stop now? By the end of next season I hope the pup will not need ( in my mind) to have a couple of easy summer runs and she'll start again end of august/ sept.thumbs.gif

theres a big differance in giving a pup the odd outing to bring it on and going out hunting proper in the summer .we all know and were taught /told never hunt in a month without an r in it but if truth be told that doesnt hold true anymore cos theres still pregnant does about in sept and they seem to breed most of the year nowadays.i have never classed myself as a summer hunter but would /will go out on the odd occasion to give a pup a slight advantage over what she would get in the winter months. and gotta say theres some bullshit posted on these sites how cansomeone trying to get a run for their inexperienced pup be classed in the same way as someone who goes out all summer with a experienced dog bitch slaughtering next years sport

My point exactly mate, you don't have to kill everything you see to keep the pup ticking over, and the season is getting shorter and shorter so if you stopped and started when you find pregnant does you would hardly ever get out. Although I will not run her next summer as I hope she will have seen enough to take a break.

After reading on the ferreting section that people ferret all year round that I don't geticon_eek.gif

good post mate to many p c hunters on here if you got a young dog it needs to be out as been said theres milkys out there in feb and the lad who started the post asked would it be ok to give is pup a few runs then every one thinks he is a summer hunter there is nothing wrong in getting a pup out for a few runs on rabbits better to learn its trade now than 5 months down the line and i dont think it was owt to do with running hares as its against the law any time of the year atb.

I,V got a dog aprox 10 months old and I,m pretty confidant that come next Sept,Oct depending on the weather it may well be rock hard next Sept ,she will have retained enough of the lessons she has learned this year to be able and confidant when the time comes although she has not done a great deal this year she has seen plenty of what is expected of her by watching her elders. She,s had a couple of easy rabbits and has a enough idea what is expected of her after all what have people been doing for the first 10-12months of the pups lives mine was spent training and retraining not only running but staying standing sitting fetching ,walking to heel stock breaking and every thing that makes life that much less stressful in doing all the training work she was gradually and slowly introduced to what is to be her role in life which is catching small furry animals. After plenty of time has been spent on what are after all dry runs of the real thing and when you feel its time is right it,s so much easier if you,v done training that entering is,nt something that your dog finds difficult. If I felt I had to run milky does or young to get my dog going I would take a good look at my training methods or the quality of the dogs I was keeping. Why dont you just ferret a couple and drop them like the rest that can,t be bothered to put the time and effort in then proudly tell of its prowess at killing .There,s no wonder hunting with dogs was targeted to be banned.I was shown an advert just the other day from an old copy of the CMW good day time dog had a couple of dropsies it makes you wonder what kind of tw8ts keep dogs .my bitchpost-45972-0-24232000-1304263350_thumb.jpg
