Buster321c 1,010
Hi , not been in this section before , but im thinking of getting a small set up , with some finches so some advise would be fantastic .I dont want to jump in with no knowledge at all , and have no idea what im doing , so be gentle with me . Im kind of thinking of 4-6 birds , that are fairly hardy ( begginer dont forget ) and advise on feed , housing , anything i should know really . If i can get my hands on a small set up thats looking for a better home , then let me know . All advise welcomed , Buster .

Meroman 105
Buster start off with a pair of greenfinches, a pair of siskins and maybe a pair of redpolls, it is possible to breed these in cages but a small aviary or flight cages would be better. A pair or two of either Irish Fancy or fife canaries would be a good start also if you get a couple of double breeding cages these canaries are not difficult to breed. A good British finch mixture /canary mix will be needed for them with added greens a few times a week, broccoli or wild seed heads is what I feed plus soaked seed and eggfood during the breeding season as a rearing food for the chicks.
gnipper 6,435
Good luck with whatever you choose, I got a pair of canaries last weekend and i've got 2 eggs already My mate keeps zebra's canaries and some little quail in his small aviary and they do ok and survived the bad cold we had this winter. J Darcy 5,871
Well siskins and redpolls are superb for starting, and they won't really bully each other like greenies can.and...best of all, you can get them very very tame... one cock siskin i had would feed even if I was touching the nest....can't buy a feeling like that! Malt 379
Good luck with it Busty! I spend a lot of time as a youngster sat with my granddad in the bird sheds & flights surrounded by finches, canaries, budgies, love birds, cockateels & quails. The problem is I was only a nipper, so can't advise on anything.. I'm hoping that one day that I'll be in a position to start keeping a few myself, maybe start in a similar way to yourself.
