Barrie 1,325
During the early part of 2010, the previous Labour Government issued a public consultation paper relating to possible replacement legislation for the existing Dangerous Dogs Act. Their stated reasons being concerns over the increased ownership of so called status dogs and the increase in dog related injuries. One of the main solutions being put forward was that legislation should be introduced which would require all dogs to be microchipped and to also carry third party liability insurance. The National Working Terrier Federation (NWTF) responded to this paper in May 2010 expressing their concerns at these proposals, along with numerous other organisations. Some of which shared the same views and others which did not. To see the full extent of the consultation, the various proposals and the NWTF's response click here. The Government has yet to formally publish its proposals, but it was widely reported over the Bank Holiday weekend in the press and on television that there are plans afoot to introduce legislation requiring the compulsory microchipping of all dogs. So far there has not been any mention of compulsory insurance, but thats not to say it will not apply also, otherwise whats the purpose of identifying each dog? Vets charge anything from £35 to £65 per dog for this service and would add anything from £175 - £325 to the cost of an average litter. It would be an unnecessary burden on responsible dog owners at a time of national austerity and be completely ignored by the very group the legislation was intended to target. Once the Government do publish their proposals it is important that those who share these concerns make them fully known and where it will have most effect. The forum owners are just as concerned as I and others are about these proposals and have willingly agreed to my posting on each of the relevant forums details of any updates and actions which may be taken. Y.I.S. - Barrie Vets charge £10 near me & anything else is scaremongering. All my dogs are chipped & I had a stolen dog returned after 10 months because he was chipped. I recommend chipping to ALL RESPONSIBLE dog owners. I do not agree with making it compulsory but a balanced approach is needed NOT stories based on rumours 1 Quote Link to post

Malt 379
My JRT came ready chipped from the people who bred her as part of the legal requirements for her docked tail. My lurcher got done free of charge by my local council dog wardens who were running a scheme. While I don't agree with it being compulsory, I can't see the problem with getting it done. It's nowhere near as expensive as quoted in the original post, and if those prices were quoted, I'd be looking for another vet.. Quote Link to post
nrat 8
Our dog was micro chipped for £10 after paying £400 for a pup the extra small charge seems irelavant really plus there is piece of mind that if your dog is lost or stolen you have more chance of getting it back, also micro chipping and insurance would reduce the number of litters born each year, there are so many litters born where people think they will make a quick buck then they find they cant sell the pups, Quote Link to post
deck 35
might be cheap enough now but wait till it becomes compulsory vets will be laughing all the way to the bank again Quote Link to post
danw 1,748
As has already being said if the dog has a docked tail then chipping is already compulsory my vet charges me £22 for health check/dock/dew and chip each pup I don't think that is really taking the piss and he already has me by the bolocks cause he is the only vet round here who will dock. 2434me 13
Chip every single dog! Then the rescue and stray centres could scan the dog and charge for putting the dog up and its return .Save the country a fortune! If you dont transfer the chip details when you sell the dog ,then its YOU that gets charged if the dog is abandoned or lost. Give these puppy farmers and " couldnt give a sh** merchants", something to think about if they new it would all come back on them!!! After 5 years, every stray caught without a collar or a chip should be put down. If you cant afford £10/20 to get your dog chipped ,then you cant afford a dog! ps, My dogs are all chipped Edited May 1, 2011 by 2434me 1 Quote Link to post
