Rattin problems....

Recommended Posts

I went ratting on Sunday night with a few mates to a permission that we have just got. We took with us, a chainsaw, ferrets, 3 terriers and a lurcher. :gunsmilie:

The place was swarming with them but we only got 9 because very few bolted into the open as they had the run of a cavity wall in an outbuilding that was about 80-100 foot long. We could see that they had taken loads of straw and hay into the cavity for nesting so we didn't want to use the chainsaw incase the place caught fire with hot carbon from the exhaust and it would have taken hours for the ferret to get round the whole wall and even then it might not make the rats bolt. :wallbash:

The owner doesn't want to use poison because the rats are also in the cavity walls of the house and last time he used poison, some rats died in the house wall cavity and stank the place out for weeks.

Does anyone know of a way to do this? And has anyone dealt with anything like this before? We know they're there, it's jus gettin the little b_sturds out!!

Thanks guys

I wouldn't put ferrets in the Walls where we go,they could end up anywhere,go missing but come back at some point to kill the hens, pheasants that run round most spots I go ratting on.

I love lamping rats and whilst half an hour out usually only gets us 3-6 rats(sometimes less ) it's good fun,but once numbers build up it's air rifle job.

Traps work but on most places we go on a dozen or sometimes far more can be shot in an hour or two,it would take a good number of fenn traps to do that.

All this dosent help someone wanting them for dogs though and I wish I could get them all with the mutts but it's just not possible and the rats do need killing.the way I re it is try and get what you can with dogs then sort the rats out with other methods and hopefully word gets round that you can do a good job on them which leads to more permissions where dogs might be used.

Thanks guys,

Well we've got traps there at the moment baited with a bit of snickers bar.

I don't know about the rat attack smoker you know. I've never used one so this isn't from my own experience but it seems you either love em or hate em.

I think the air rifle seems like a good idea though.

Thanks for the advice, more is welcome!!

Kind of on the same topic........What do you reckon is the biggest rat you've caught is? There is one at this place HAS to be around 9 inches long without the tail that has my name all over it

I do a lot of ratting first please do not use rat attack they can belch out fire & you could easily torch the place if you want one I have one you can buy as there crap best used for what they were designed for killing insect in green houses ,water is your best option but hose pipe to small need submersible pump & good length of fire house this is my fav piece of kit use it were ever I can better than a scud (chain saw) does not make a lot of noise & will not damage terriers nose! If no water supply you will need generator but you need to be looking at large numbers to justify this expense
