tommcglough14 0
hello guys, just looking for a bit of advice on getting my first dog. im only debating it so far but it would be worked with ferrets and on the lamp. i would be getting the dog second hand as i am new to training and havent much of a clue. i have a few questions first though, would the dog be okay living outside in a run if it was walked everyday? and how much time is needed to be spent with them as being 16 i am in college so would be absent during the day? any help appreciated, thanks. Find some one in your area to take you out If you can,t train or exercise it you should,nt be thinking of getting one just yet .Get some practical hands on experience from someone that has a few years working dogs not just daytime slipping but proper dog work a good all rounder that is trained to a high standard of obedience .Pick their brains of as much info on dogs as you can.Where do you live give some idea as to how much you know already also if keeping any animal out doors it needs to be in properly made accommodation not a drafty leaky shed made from old pallets and plastic sheeting. What will you be doing after college job wise will you have time to keep a dog as the poor thing will end up being passed on and on and it would not be fair on it.Spending time with someone will give you some idea on the time and commitment a dog takes its more difficult the less you know ,every thing will take twice as long to do until you become more competent,Also if you get a second hand dog as you put it you could be buying all kinds of behavioural problems unless you know who you are getting it from and know them very well. Its no good asking for a trial if you have no idea what to expect they could tell you any old crap and probably will .Not many people get rid of a good dog if its any good his mates will have it of him. iceman001979 1,316
Best thing l can tell you is take your time the hunting season does not start till 5 months time so dont rush in and buy the 1st one that comes along. Make sure you get dog that suits you and you suit the dog. As already said try get someone bring you out and look up on here the different breeds for lamping and ferreting. If was me l would look down collie x or beddy x line but as l said there is no rush. The dog be fine while your away just have get up bit earlier bring him or her walk before you head off for the day and the same when you get back. But make sure you have your home work done 1st all best Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
First thing is dont be lured into the idea of an older dog thinking its the easy route 99% your getting someone elses shite. You would be far better getting a pup now and bringing it on next season. Its not rocket science, its not that difficult and you will end up with a much better finnished product than someone elses cast off. FTB 1 Quote Link to post

Sorley x 32
Get a pup, if it is your first get a bitch (less pushy than a dog) dont get anything with too much collie in as gthey are not an ideal 1st dog. I am collie mad and would suggest a 3/4 frey 1/4 collie bitch. But dont listen to me. Look for a dog you like the look of and one that suits you. Get it as a pup and spend time with it. There is lots of advice on training and you are better off making your mistakes than having to live with someone elses. Good ferreting dogs are treasured and rarely sold. They would be given to someone trusted. Good luck Quote Link to post

shepp 2,285
I agree with Sorley, 1/4 collie at the most. I think collie grey cross whippet is a good little cross for mooching. Try and avoid a pup or dog that someone is trying too hard to push onto you. Spend time looking at who is respected and been on here a long time and follow leads from them.
