Am happy with 10 rabbits a night and 1 hare on a day out same with fox but everyone is different . Welcome to THL and good 1st topic be good here everyone's reply Quote Link to post

JPTfellterrier 65
forget about the numbers....a good dog is a pot filler, a pest controler and your best friend IN MY OPINION 2 Quote Link to post
toby1066 413
for me it more about what percentages a dog catches you could say a dog catches 20 rabbits it done well but a lot dont say how many it ran if a dog ran 40 rabbits and caught 20 its not a very good dog so its all about the numbers run as well as killed. a dog that run 40 and kills 35+ thats a good dog. or a hare dog that run 4 hares and killed 3 or 4 out of 4 thats a good dog. Ideation 8,216
Obviously in some senses numbers do count, such is in competitive coursing. The higher number wins, but it doesn't ALWAYS mean that the 'better' dog won. When it comes to hunting and comparing its just hot air. You see 50 rabbits and get 30 runs with an average dog and you'd hope to pick up at least 10, but get a half dozen long, tough slips and take 4/5 and that's a better dog. Also i'd rate a dog that can find, track, hunt and catch on our 'big' land (not the flat fen land), much much higher, than a lamper, no matter the numbers involved. But that's a personal preference. At the end of the day a good dog is one that makes you happy. 3 Quote Link to post
itsme 7
some good replys thankyou, but in my day i liked to walk the big land and 3 runs where never enough i wanted to run the dogs till i was happy 7 8 or even 9 runs a day now iam a differant person i lamp rabbits mainly just to get out of the house as i dont like the mrs much and theres nothing on tv we dont have loads of rabbits but 10 runs for a dog is an average night and the bitch is knackered now with that, but when i was younger i wouldnt of been happy with that number i like to know what the dogs are like, if there something special, suppose its my competitive streak coming out from my old days One thing i would never do is allow a dog to tell me its time to go home, Quote Link to post
MOO 730
I have to disagree that a good un is a dog that makes you happy ....it might be a good dog in the eye of the beholder but that doesnt make it a good dog Quote Link to post
DottyDoo 500
imo bags of big numbers often is what seperates the good dogs from the not so good dogs Quote Link to post
