j j m 6,539
mate fly the bird as many times as you can ,theres a lot of people that just fly them on a week end as they work all week some people will disagree with this but it happens and doesnt harm the bird anyway but the more you can fly your bird the better,i fly mine every day weather or injury permitting Quote Link to post

waidmann 105
i fly a male harris (last seasons bird and my first) and i get him out doing fist jumps and steep bank flying when its not possible to hunt him due to work. as above he will be entered on the lamp this year (i work two shifts so am often working untill ten at night). the more the bird flies the fitter he will be and so hunt better. the first few weeks of manning etc take alot of time (try to get the bird when you have some holiday booked and it will be easier). after that its not too bad, weighing everyday and a walk to the park when on weight to fly and feed (to hold the weight he has...........) i must say that getting the hawk was the best thing i ever did (i also shoot, ferret and work the terrier. i enjoy all of these but working the dog with the ferrets and bird together beats a challenging shot with the gun hands down!!!!!! if you have someone near by who can mentor you and are sure you can manage the upkeep/work for the bird i would always say go for it (after reading up and preparing yourself/garden etc obviously lol). waidmannheil!!! errrr falconersheil!!!
