wife 1
how many of you lads have lurchers which will mark fox to ground,2 good freinds of mine have 2 lurchers which are brother and sister and they use them for marking fox ,pre ban they used to use them to catch of the holes as well,if there lurchers dont mark when they walk up to some holes there terrier does not go in,its as simple as that, some say whats if its deep and big and can they be sure that there is nothing in there if they dont mark,i also asked them this question going back years ago when i used to do alot with these lads, quite often we would walk up to some holes and if the lurchers did not mark the 2 lads would say next lot of holes,i would say this looks to good to me and i would say can i run a terrier through first, they never minded me doing this and every time they did not mark and myself or one of the lads would run a terrier through there was nothing in there, every time they did mark there was a fox in there,,i will add that these lads are only interested in fox and do not let there dogs run rabbits, they did when they were young but they would not risk a injury to the dogs toes or any other part of the dog as there main game is fox work in the day time and these dogs catch most of there foxes of the holes, not all of them but these lads do not use any nets at al,most weekends when they go out there is a 3 rd lurcher there as well so they have 3 lurchers covering the holes, was wondering if any other lads have dogs that will mark fox to ground and they have that much faith in there dogs that if they dont mark the terrier dont go in,i am sure there are lots out there and i have seen some good lurchers catch in the day time but not many that will mark fox to ground the way these do,keep hunting Quote Link to post
celt 1
Wife My brothers old dog does exactly that , he hunts up marks to ground, if the game is fiesty he helps the draw and on the bolt if we only have one gun out he looks after the other side if you know what i mean. He is nearly eight now and still doing well Quote Link to post
Guest mucker
id expect any dog to do it wife if its been brought along with the terriers from a young age,no rare thing, no different to a ferreters dogs. the white dog in the pic is very reliable and if he said there was nothing there.. there wasnt. still i always let a terrier run through to be sure. he wasnt that interested in marking rabbits and did it half heartedly. great for marking or a bolt but breaking through he didnt want any part of it . have a 12 month old bullx showing the same promise. old pic of the white dog marking fox. THE POACHER 13
if my lurcher is marking theres somthing in the earth he goes into a mooching mode and crys around the holes Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
I have one lurcher now who will tell you exactly which hole the terrier went in if there are a lot of holes and the terrier is running loose and has found the earth on its own. I had a lurcher a long time ago that several times marked where the terrier and fox were underground: straight through the ground, nose to the earth and whining: mind you our earths aren't very deep: 6 foot max.; brilliant if the collar packed up, and once she dug a litter of cubs out of one part of the earth while the terrier was on the vixen several yards away on the same bank. She was one of the best fox dogs I've had: and her daughter and grand daughter were also spot on:Beardie/Greyhound, for starters, and lots more in there as the line went on; she would crawl into very small places to draw them too, by the time she was 4 years old she wasn't interested in rabbits at all any more, and would only hunt fox and larger quarry. wife 1
Wife i think if some lurchers are taken out with the terriers from a young age it seems to come natural to them ,just my opinion think your right there mate, this season i been doing alot of day work with my lurcher,he knows whats happening as soon as that shovel starts going,at first he would be running round annoying the other dogs or sniffing about,he realised what is going on now and does not play round that much now,the last few times we gone out he been showing good signs of marking,at irst he had no interest in sticking his head in the mouth of a hole but he been seeing the end result at thee nd of a dig recently and always has a good look at every hole,on the last 2 days out with him he stopped on a certain hole on 2 earths and had a scratch, fingers crossed he will come good,my mates dogs only really see day work and they have caught 15 out of 16 foxes off the holes in there 7 th season, not seen dogs like them for there marking ability being true every time and the last dog that i did see as good as them was there mother which was going back 12 years ago, keep hunting Quote Link to post
Guest furryferter
That is a very handy tool a lurcher that can mark 100% its all about doing it excperiance wife I still like a terrier that will run through places especailly big places just to make sure especially young dogs I like seeing a young dog checking every inch of a hole Quote Link to post
Bailey 16
All our lurchers will mark, some will stand with the head in the hole others will pull sods from the entrance of the hole and go crazy but yet and all they are not 100 % reliable. Terriers are bred for there nose and we wait until they decide if there is something at home or not. Quote Link to post
