Alex Arrigone 24
hi all, i went to our main rabbit permission today for an afternoon shoot. i arrived about 12 and started walking around. i had seen a number of rabbits however i didnt manage a shot. after 20 minutes of walking round i got to a hot spot and saw a rabbit's ears in the annoyingly long grass. it was a 50 m shot however it was quite windy and the pellet missed. the rabbit got spooked and ran towards me. i'd tried to get this rabbit on the previous day with no luck and i knew where it was running to. as the rabbit was running towards a hedge line, i ran towrds it, to block its route. the rabbit literally ran to within kicking distance of me before it stopped in its tracks! in shock at the events unfolding before me i took a shot at the rabbit and took it down. it was pretty much point blank so the scope (set on 10 x zoom) was useless. i dedcided i was happy i could get the kill without usung the scope. instant kill, it flopped over without even a twitch. happy with the good start i headed over to another fence that ran parallel to the motorway. i had seen a rabbit there on my approch but it had also seen me due to the open ground. it had ran in so i lay down at 30 m and waited. after about 15 minutes i saw some ears, then a head of a fully grown rabbit. i put the rifle in the shoulder and lined up the cross hairs. unfortunately there were a few twigs in the way and i couldnt take a clear shot so i waited, looking down my scope for 10-15 more minutes before it hopped out enough to get a clean shot. i pulled the trigger and the rabbit dropped. feeling satisfied that the arm cramp and the eye strain from holding the aim so long was worth it, i walked off with my catch. i then walked to another area where i had seen activity on the previous day and sat off. nothing came out so after a good half hour i decided to move on. as io got up a rabbits head poped outof the long grass in some dead ground 20 m to my right. i was unable to take a prone position shot so a kneeling unsuported was the only optioin. i misunderestimated the distance and missed . the rabbit ran off however stopped at what i believed was 50 meters. by now it had ran out of the dead ground and a prone shot was possible. i aimed two mill dots and took the shot, i saw the splash of the round above its head, yet its sat still. i adjusted to one mil dot and tried again. it follwed by a twack and a half decent back flip. the rabbit back flipped into a pond, soggy rabbit and soggy feet for me. none the less chuffed with my kill i headed to add the rabbit to my accumulating pile. on my way i noticed a rabbit at ruffly 70 meters away. i dropped the soggy rabbit and started to crawl, pausing wenever it looked up above the long grass. i got to 40 meters and decided to take the shot. it dropped. fourth rabbit in the bag. the next few hours where quiet, but determined to catch an evasive rabbit i decided to try a different approach and sat off in a tiny patch of wood overlooking where it kept popping out from. pictures of my position : i sat there for about 10 miutes before the fith and final rabbit hopped out of its hole. it was zero range and the pellet hit home. the rabbit backflipped. unfortunately it was unretreavable as it fell back into its hole. by the time i had clambered through the stick it was well out of reach. it was getting on by now and i had to head home. this was my personal best and i was happy with the result! hope this was a good read. atb. alex Quote Link to post

secretagentmole 1,701
Cracking read! Going down the range this week to check how the guns work at longer ranges (at the minute I am a 30 metre, sometimes 40 metre man). Lovely photos, lovely shooting and a nice permission as well! Great write up! Quote Link to post
