Recommended Posts

Let me get this right..... You've only seen 2 rabbits in 4 months in a field just out your back and yet this guy manages to get over a weeks solid lamping out of it? My advice to you is ask him if you can join him, sounds like he could teach you the art of finding rabbits..... :whistling:

:laugh::laugh::notworthy: @ steve66

I live just across from the original poster :thumbs: and have for a lot longer than 4 months, this summer lamping is not unusual at all in these parts, in fact the only thing that suprised me about the whole story is that there was only one dog out, usually when I bump into this lot they are team handed at least 3/4 lads minimum and usually a dog or two each as well :blink: never see a sign of them in the winter exercisig there dogs or lamping them and I would know as its my permison they poach lol mind at least they fitten the rabbits etc up for my dogs :tongue2:

I was chatting to one of them the other week and asking how his dog done over the winter, he tells me he never runs it in winter and only lamps now to fitten it up for the shows (he won cock of the north a couple of years back with it :laugh: ), he says the judges like to see a bit muscle on the dogs in the shows etc :icon_eek: surely this aint right in the off season? :blink: , but i dont know as i dont go to shows no interst :thumbs:

Lampin Lurchgers they wont be gettin many more on that field or the one in front of it cause the owner just sprayed them to stop the horses being put on there, he asked me to ferret the bur at the bottom of the factory but I said no cause the younfg are i there, plus all the kids round here start learning ferreting on that set :thumbs: they will be gone soon enough the rabbits when the factory comes down and the housing estate goes up :wallbash:

You serious about lamping for the shows articgun?

yes mate, I see the lad about now and again local, him and there lass are well into the shows, I think the dogs won a fair bit local and further afield in last few year deffo won cock of the north comp couple of years back,fair play to them its a handsome looking thing :victory:

he telt me he lamps it this time of year to get the muscles pumped and toned up for the showing on weekends during spring and summer, gets it into working shape, he tells me they avoid running stuff on hedges fences etc or around excessive cover, hence avoiding the dog getting ripped up, same with wet nights messes coat up too much and also more chance of slip and injury. he also told me that when the dogs win shows it increases the likelyhood of being used as stud (which makes sense)and sells litters :whistling:

likesay its not my cup of tea :thumbs: , each to their own and all that :victory: I will say one thing though, he does keep his dogs well and look after them:yes:

I'd never have believed that if you hadn't said. You sure he isn't pulling your leg lol..... I suppose it takes allsorts....

oh they serious alrite :thumbs: like i said the dog looks the part and then some :yes: he dont make any big claims on its ability graft wise mind,honest enough lad to his credit :thumbs: sells pups at sensible prce as well from what Im told

it aint that big a place where i live at and only so many places to exercise dogs same graft wise, I never ever see em at all in the winter, same with most the lads from the local lurcher club :o come spring when its nice around 7am they all out in force, same of an evening especially the young uns going lamping, better they down fields than round streets though :yes:

incidently the rabbits they on about on the bit of land behind the factory are about the hardest rabbits in the country to catch :icon_eek:

they see about 100 dogs a day, not to mention constant stream of people cars lorries etc from the factories,lurchers airguns ferrets etc,they been plagued to death for years day and night :yes: they sit 5/10 yards from a harris fence that they know every gap in it :victory: once they in that factory yard they safe as houses under pallets

my dogs are always running them about the place when we pass on way out for walks :laugh: if I catch one there every couple of years Im chuffed to bits :victory: make fen hares look easy these boys do :toast:

i'l still do a small bit of lamping over the summer but only if the weather is right and it's dark enough mainly just to keep the ferrets with fresh meat while their breeding and maybe a few fox's if im ask to keep the farmer or the gun club happy if they are losing lambs or birds but that is just to keep the premisen i'd rather leave them alone until september and if i did'nt do it someone else would but lamping the same place constantly will only school the young rabbits that will provide great sport in the winter
